I'm thinking of buying a 4 inch or shorter barrel & have a gunsmith swap out the 8.5 inch barrel for the 4 inch !!!

I recently traded a fellow INGO member my 4" model 29 for his 8 3/8" model 29, his plan was to do exactly what you are planning, this trade seemed to make more sense. Unless you are planning other modifications the cost of the barrel and gunsmithing charges plus the cost of the gun, you could have bought a 4" to begin with. If you are set on changing from a 8.5" to a 4", I think it would be more cost effective to trade guns or sell your gun and buy a shorter one.

I was looking for a 4 inch 44 mag.The reason I bought this 8.5 inch barrel gun, is cause It's in excellent condition & the price was right.

My nickel plated 6.5" model 29 was my first handgun, and is still my favorite to shoot! Chest size groups at 70 yards offhand with factory iron sights! Can't complain about accuracy!
