Without specifics, probably something in the 1/4 or 1/2 ton body on frame. Diesel is probably better than gas - long term. Gas in the immediacy might be better. SHTF means a lot of different things to different people.

... SHTF means a lot of different things to different people.

Everything has it's downside. Just because you can get out in SHTF, should you really get out? Which is the higher risk?

Fire up that noisy truck and leave the ranch and everyone along the way knows you are gone. The same as hearing you returning.

I’d say any mechanically injected diesel. Easy to make bio diesel from spare fats and greases to run it. You only need a working battery/power source to get it cranked over.

Small gas engines can be run off the fumes from charcoal. Takes a little ingenuity to make it work. I have seen some pictures of charcoal burners set up on the running boards during WW2 IIRC.

I figure a bicycle is going to be the best way to get around. Best basic reliable fool proof 4wd truck, easy a 1 ton square body Chevy with mild 350 465 trans, and 205 transfer case detroit rear, arb front, 35 spline outers, and 37 inch tires with 2 inch lift. Upgrade parts from ORD. I believe a member here posted about his great version of this. If everything really falls apart it will be the coolest piece of yard art in your village as everyone walks by it.
