what caliber was this (didn't make it sunday, til almost 3 and most were gone)

    just curious

This one was in 50 BMG. This gentleman spent the fair amount of the morning breaking in his AR50, so periodically individuals on adjacent benches were blessed with a courtesy muzzle blast to help keep them from falling asleep.

This is referred to as shallow depth of field. Depth of field is the range in which objects are perceived to be in focus. Several things have an effect on depth of field. Two of which are focal length and aperture size (F stop). The longer the focal length, the more shallow the DOF and the larger the aperture (smaller F stop number) the more shallow the DOF. In this particular photo, the aperture was F1.6 and the focal length was 50mm, thus, the aperture was rather large with an intermediate focal length. Given these conditions, the result was a very shallow relative depth of field, so the background and some of the foreground turned to blurry art (bokeh). This is advantageous when the objective is to draw the viewer’s eye to a specific subject in the photo and blur out any distracting elements in the background. Another advantage of the larger aperture is that it enables a higher shutter speed which can enable one to capture brass being ejected from the ejection port when a subject is in the process of firing.

I was guessing it was a sub 2 lens but couldn't be sure if it was just the aperture or if it was increased focal length in play as well.

You should also point out the trade off with the faster lens is that you better know where your subject is going to be (if it's an action shot) with such a shallow DOF. Makes your photography that much more impressive. That's some good stuff there.

Very true. With a shallow DOF, the probability of an out of focus shot goes up, and particularly so when the photographer and/or the subject is moving in the same direction as the barrel axis of the lens. This can be an issue even when shooting with auto focus in servo mode.
