      Black Powder firearms discussion

I have picked up caps at Gander Mountain, they usually have a few in their black powder department. Not a lot so I buy up all they have when I do find them. You can also order them from Dixie Gun Works Dixie Gun Works muzzleloading, blackpowder and rare antique gun supplies. but you will have...

I almost caught my local gun range on fire.

I set Don't Guns indoor range on fire once. I was shooting an 1860 Colt 44 caliber loaded with blackpowder. That gun shoots sparks about 6 or 8 feet from the muzzle. One of the sparks landed in the expansion crack in the concrete floor. The crack was full of unburned powder that had...

What gun to buy to complete my life?

Get a flintlock Kentucky longrifle, you know you always wanted one. You will have a chance to relearn shooting all over again. It is a lot less expensive to shoot, especially if you cast your own ball. Blackpowder only, substitutes won't work. Buck67

400 yard shots with a Flintlock. Just for your general information. My Buddy Jesse and I went to Friendship today to shoot a target at 400 yards with our flintlocks. The target was 2' wide by 6' tall. Any hit on the board counts. Out out of 20 shots, I got three hits and Jesse got one...

      Thoughts on Home Defense Shotguns?

I have an old Browning A-5 Auto in 12 ga. I used to carry it with me when I had an alarm call at my office. This is back when getting a licence to carry a pistol was hard to get. The office was in a bad part of downtown Indianapolis. I would step out of the truck, grab the A-5, push the...

Caliber Choice for a "Meat Buffalo" Which of these three????

I talked with a guy that had a buffalo herd. I asked him what he used to kill them. He said the first 100 or so he just walked up to them and shot them with a 38Special. After he pissed one off with the 38 and it came after him, he said he switched to a 44 Magnum after he got out of the...

      help with the wife

My wife didn't care for guns when we first got married. Her parents had never had guns so she didn't see why I needed them. Through the years (44 now) she has come to learn that I am going to have guns and I am going to shoot them. Blackpowder guns got her interested in shooting. Now she has...

A New .45 Project for Deer Season

This cartridge sounds somewhat like the obsolete 11.7 X 56R cartridge that I reload for my original 1874 Danish Rolling Block. I shorten a 45/70 case to 2.101" and load it with 60 grains of 1.5F black powder and a 500 grain .458 lead bullet. This gives me an OAL of 2.85". Sometimes the rim is...

      Bowling Ball Mortar Black Powder

I have seen one shoot bowling balls about 400 yards. The price seems too steep. I mean you are buying a cut off Oxygen cylinder and a welded on powder chamber. BTW, the one I saw needed to have the bowling balls turned down on a lathe so they would fit in the barrel. 350 grains of black...

Yard Sale Shotgun - What have I got here?

Until you can find out if it was proofed with modern smokeless powder, don't shoot anything but blackpowder loads in it. It looks like a shooter.

Like with all the blackpowder substitute gun powders; you need to remember to clean the gun after shooting regardless of the advertising claims. Many of the substitute powders are actually faster to cause rust in a barrel than old fashioned blackpowder. Also, the substitute powders can cause...

Getting wild and crazy with a 45-70.

I shot a buddies 45-110 a couple of times. That was some serious recoil. I'm not sure I would want to shoot a 45-110 regularly. It was fun but you really had to screw up your courage before taking another shot.

Getting wild and crazy with a 45-70.

Better to stick with Blackpowder, the gun may be modern steel but the design was meant for the lower pressures of blackpowder. A 45-70 loaded with blackpowder has about the same chamber pressure as a modern 12 ga shotgun.
