      I have the P380 and the PM9. The 380 is so small it just disappears. It also is a dream to shoot. Haven't spent as much time yet with the 9, but so far I am happy. Working on a 45 now. The quality, trigger and accuracy are top notch. If your patient, there are great deals on used ones also.

      Another G-Shock vote. There are several models that are solar and atomic for less than $300. Mine has served me well in the great outdoors.

      I'm thinking that if you were within 21 feet of the shed and they rushed out coming towards you, most likely by the time you reacted they would be past you and running away and if you shoot and kill or wound you are going to jail.
