Buy elsewhere. Like hell I'm going to carry around a locked toolbox with ammo in it while I consider other purchases. And stores wonder why they lose so much business to online ammo distributors---it's cheaper, more efficient, and you aren't treated like a criminal.

It's wouldn't sway me one way or another, but if there was a store where everything was the same as this one EXCEPT the tool box thing, I'd go there. I'm happy to pay for ammo in the sporting goods department. Doing this seems to resolve all issues in the OP without annoying the customer.

EDIT: I do think I'd be prone to put the toolbox down while looking at other items and then not buy it. As of now, I've never picked up ammo and then changed my mind and set it down. This COULD cause me to do that.

I'd rather see a register installed at the ammo counter. Pay there. Solves the problem and more acceptable to many than being escorted around the store.

It's almost as bad as you buying porn and having the woman ringing up your
"debbie does everybody" and getting on the store intercom an asking for a price check
when grandma and the grandkids are in the next isle casting looks of disgust at you.
Please tell me we are still speaking hypothetically? :dunno:

If there was another store in my area, selling at a reasonable price, I would go there instead, especially if they had other good "man merchandise".

On a non-hypothetical note: Just the other day I found a store where I could buy handgun ammo by: removing it from the shelf, placing it in my cart with the rest of my selections, and paying for it all at the cash register. It surprised me that there were still "non-gun" type stores that did ammo business this way. I'll be going back there, and I will be buying ammo with whatever else I need. :yesway:

Rural King in Columbus does that.

With ammo prices at ridiculously high prices not only would I put up with that I would paint myself blue run naked with the tool box of ammo and sing a rap song the whole way to the cashier, IF the ammo was cheap enough, say Pre Obama era (roughly 50% less than it is now).

Wouldn't bother me either way. I get some ammo at Wally world. But if I see a deal at a gun shop I'll buy it. If that's what has to be done to keep some low life from ripping the store off so be it.

Is the hypothetical store doing this Joe? I haven't been there in a while...

Yup. Cashier brought a tool box full of ammo back from the register today, sat it on the counter, and said ten people had changed their minds and left the ammo so far. This was early in the day. Hopefully, we've not lost those customers. Guy from corporate said they've been doing it at other stores with absolutely zero complaints, and this is the way it is going to be.

If you don't like it, feel free to ask for a manager, tell them why you didn't buy the ammo, and ask how to let corporate know.

But do bear in mind the store isn't doing it for fun and games. No store irritates customers without good reason. We've flat been getting ripped off blind, since we don't always have time to walk it to the front. Further, there have been days lately, as sales have started booming, where I've done almost NOTHING else but walk back and forth to the registers to deliver ammo. When this happens, the store isn't getting any other work from me, nor are other customers able to take advantage of the knowledge of guns, hunting, and other stuff the store pays me for. Since we don't make much on the guns and ammo anyway, they've gotta do SOMETHING to stem the losses. If you want to complain, please provide them with another affordable suggestion. Sadly, just letting customers take the ammo up front themselves doesn't work, unless you want to pay more. That's just a cold, hard, reality.

So far today, some customers have changed their minds, some laughed, some didn't seem to care. But I gotta tell you, I feel silly putting a 20 round box of pistol ammo into a gigantic toolbox. I might suggest some smaller boxes also be available LOL.

Walmart still walks you and the firearm to the door....and when I purchased a firearm at Cabelas ...they did it too.

I'm not going to vote. Just because it all depends on the price of the ammo. If it's a real good deal, then I don't care if they have to carry it to the front. If they have to carry it, I'm just going to make sure it's a crap load of ammo, that'll teach them!

I don't see why your store can't just put a register back there. Seems it would be a lot easier.

If its a local, sole proprietor establishment, I would buy here. I understand wanting to keep your money, and I would rather support the local stuff. If it was Dicks or something like that... I wouldn't buy it.

When I bought my Ruger 10/22 at Dick's the purchase was taken to the counter for me by an employee. I was surprised, but I understood the man's explanation that they did not like people with new weapons just wandering about the store. I still bought the rifle.

    Being Walked Out

Being walked out is annoying. Is it a deal breaker? No, especially if the price is right!

Hi Joe! Thanks for suggesting that I check this forum out.

LOL I think I know who you are now. I was wondering when I saw your intro post.

Being walked out is silly, but fairly harmless I guess. I always get a kick when they walk me and/or Cathy out (yep, we get walked out, too.) Heck, I've had to walk my own wife out when she's bought a gun while I'm working. Kind of silly to walk people out who have a loaded gun on their side, but at least it lets me go outside for a couple minutes :)
