I'd stay away from PTRs. I had 2 and got rid of them both. The older ones with JLD Enterprises stamped on the receiver are usually good to go, but the newer ones with PTR, Inc. on them are pretty much hit or miss. They don't use Mil-spec barrels like the original HKs do. They use a heavier barrel which the flutes are not cut deep enough and they have problems shooting certain kinds of ammo. I can attest to this since I owned one and ran into this problem. Great accuracy though, but it sucks when you are limited to only certain kinds of ammo. I'd personally go with a M1A or an accurized AR:twocents:

I would go with some variation of the M1A, loaded or something with a NM barrel. The SS barrel is not quite as accurate as the CS barrel. If you order something with a NM barrel, get a Kreiger (sp) as they have been cryo treated.

For a long range precision semi auto, go with an AR-10/LR308 rifle. I love the M1A platform as much as anyone but it takes a lot more work to build one to shoot accurately - and maintain that accuracy - than it does the AR platform. ...

    Yup.

The best reason to buy a M1A is because you simply want to buy and shoot a classic. If you try to compare the M14 platform against the AR10 it comes up short in many many ways. I think the obvious benefits to the AR platform are; Barrel in line with the stock - you get a lot less climb which makes quicker follow up shots and modularity - you can do just about anything you want to the AR platform and you won't have to buy a completely new chassis either.

I'm not saying to avoid purchasing an M1A, just saying if you are looking for the better rifle on paper I don't think you can honestly compare it against the more modern AR for really anyt reason.

I was on the net the other night and I saw a site that must have shown well over 100 military snipers. I was very surprised to see a couple who were using what appeared to be Dragunovs. I was not surprised at the number of those using .50BMGs in both bolt and semi rifles. However, I was more surprised at the large number who were using M-14s or M1As in various forms. I do not know how representative the photos are of the actual numbers using those as their primary weapon, but it was more than those using a bolt gun. I would be very interested in some actual numbers of who prefers what if anyone has them or a link to that info.
