I will say not all tapes are created equal when temps go way under zero, like -20 to -40. In that situation IMHO Gorrilla tape is better than ordinary duct tape. You will need to warm the duct tape just to make it stick.

As for small amounts of tape, why do people not wrap these lengths around a square of cardboard, a pencil or other useful item? You kids, you crack me up, but I blame your Fathers. Meister gets it.

Duct tape does fail as temps fall.

WE put in more water and cases of man soup (chunky)
Also added some preserves and jellys. They seem to have good shelf life.
More flats of water and gallon jugs of distilled. I need more milk crates for storing these.

I have a closet that I now officially dub the "water closet" because it's packed with flats of water. Any old folks/Italians should get the largely unfunny double entendre.

Yeah, why dont you show me something, like maybe duct tpae with magnesium as a fire starter? Oh wait, BTDT, like 14 years ago. I just looked at pics from a bunch of fire starting tests I did back around 2002. I am not a big fan of magnesium but when the shavings are on the sticky side of duct tape, look out. I dug them allout because I am working on a fire starter project in my head and its time to unleash the creative beast inside of me and do it.

Clearly you read my mind from the past, so it was really my idea that I had about five minutes ago.

Yeah sure, and I just made up all these old pics! Maybe I will post some this weekend in a nostalgic look back at fire and the history of man.

Also, I do live dead center in the Wisconsin equivalent of "The Bigfoot Triangle" so the ability to make fire is essential if I ever catch one. You recall most of us agreed we would kill, cook and eat it.

Did you not do that a few years ago. I seem to remember a thread on this.

I may have shared some of it a few years back. The real tests were all around 02. I made some waterproof matches, made tons of alcohol burners and played with almost anything in my survival gear that would burn. I even made a small burner out of tin foil and 4 empty .45 brass. It was not bad. All of this is when I discovered just how flammable an empty shotgun hull was. I want to make a redneck replacement for trioxane bars out of shotgun hulls.

So is it the adhesive or the fibers in duct tape that burns so well, or both?

If you tear the thinnest strips of duct tape possible that you can you'll see the frayed end from the tear put those in a loose ball and hit it with a ferro rod. It's not ideal, because it takes a lot of time, but it works just fine.

I think it is the diesel fuel. Did I forget to mention the diesel fuel?

Personally I think it may be the gray coating. It takes some real heat to get it going. What I liked about the combo with magnesium is the mag is hot enough to light up the tape and the tape holds those ridiculous mag shavings in place. I go a step further, I shave mag ahead of time and put it in a film can. I hate the stuff but is a nice waterproof backup to have around. What I did was wrap the tape around a bundle of dry twigs and then light it. Then put that in a fire lay that was ready to go. What is nice about the Mag is it can be lit with a hot spark only.

The knife is the flint I used to ignite the magnesium, not the actual magnesium bar. At the time I was teaching my kid the basics of fire and air flow and howmany things around us can be used to make fire. Then she did one with cotton and Vaseline using the same knife/flint combo.

I just put the oil lamps on the mantle. Found them stores away in some old boxes I got from my dad when he passed. Great lamps. I need to find some wicks for them.

Lehman's has assorted sizes of wick, 5 in a pack. Less than a buck apiece. Plus shipping.
