I am sending my daughter off to college and was wondering what other Dads gave their daughters for self protection while on campus. I would love to get her a 9mm but I know that won't fly. So what is left? Mace/pepper spray? Machete? Bazooka?

P.S. Do any other Dads notice how college girls looked so hot when we were younger but now that our girls are college girls we take offense to guys checking them out? No wonder I carry a gun!

Legally she can carry a gun if she's 18 and has a LTCH, it might be against school policy, but it's not illegal. That is if she is going to college in Indiana.

I just watched my lil sis go to school. I made sure she had pepper spray, the strongest I could find. I know it may not be illegal for her to carry, but getting booted from school does have the potential to screw up her entire future so she opted not to carry. It was her decision.

I don't have a daughter, but I make sure my wife has something on her to protect her at university. I want to have a rally to change IU's policy of not allowing LTCH holders carry on campus!

I do not have a daughter either but check out the new pepper spray that comes in a gel form.....I got my girlfriend it, have heard it works much better than traditional pepper spray. I would also suggest maybe a taser?

Some colleges also outlaw pepper spray etc as well.

In that case her carrying pepper spray would be just as "wrong" as her carrying a gun would be. The consequences may be different, but it is simply a campus policy and not a law.

I carried while in college, against campus policy, and I also carried to other colleges while visiting friends. I still carry on college campuses when I go there. I haven't broken any carry laws by doing so. The worst they can do it humiliate me and arrest me because I broke their "campus law", but in the end I'll walk free when they realize that they can't do anything about it. The more likely situation is that they tell me to leave, or put the gun in a car etc.

In your daughter's case, unfortunately about the worst they can do is expel her from school; what they may do is just tell her not to bring it back to school again.

I have had my daughter in karate for the past three years. She will be a black belt by the time she leaves for college. She will also be 16 when she leaves home, so this is our only option.

Correct but if caught with it on campus she could get kicked out of school. Mace, a good SD knife and some training and or an impact weapon are her best bets, as well as a cell phone and a good sized group of friends.

Here are some unique impact tools (I wear a Delta BLK around my neck everyday and no one ever suspects that I could put a nice dent in their scull with it)

Colleges are not schools in Indiana according to the Indiana code, and their is also no law against visitors carrying at a hospital, just hospital policy

That law, guns in car, only applies to employees not to college students, or visitors at any business, and you don't need a LTCH to have a long gun in your car at work.

In fact it has never been illegal to have a gun in your car at work at most businesses.

Take a look at the FAQ, it will answer some of your concerns.

Wrong. It's schools K-12 and the "carry your gun to work" law isn't what specially states this.

    From the FAQ:

    https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...16185-ingunowners_faqs_sticky.html#post187168

A more specific list of where you can NOT carry:
k-12 schools, property used for school functions
    school buses
    Head Start
    preschools
    private schools
    riverboat casinos
    airport sterile areas
    shipping ports
    State fairgrounds during State Fair
Post office (questionable, as it may not actually be Federal property)
Where prohibited by local ordinance, on gov't property

The gel and foam type mace/pepper spray has it's drawbacks. It can be scooped up and thrown back at you. This is not always the case, but it's something to consider.

Do any other Dads notice how college girls looked so hot when we were younger but now that our girls are college girls we take offense to guys checking them out? No wonder I carry a gun!

If you take offense to people checking out your adult-aged daughter, it sounds like you need some therapy, seriously. Nothing could be more entrenched in our humanity than seeking a mate of fertile age. If the reason you carry a gun is to threaten these people, perhaps you should even question why or if you should carry at all.

Personally, I think your daughter would be better served with some self defense classes than any weapon. Having pepper spray depends on having it with her, and the ability for her to deploy it and get away. A self defense class will stay with her forever, and could help her manage a situation before it gets out of control.

Nearly every college that has students staying on campus has extensive policy on the books regarding sexual assaults and most also have classes on alcohol use and polices aimed at deterring people from engaging in shady conduct.

As an adult, it's going to be one of the most useful skills she ever has, to learn how to manage men and how they respond. I am unpersuaded that there's any difference between college men out at a bar and men at a party or happy hour after work. Adult women absolutely must learn how to deal with these situations. Avoiding the worst of them will serve her far better than any amount of fighting, chemical self defense weapon, etc.
The worst they can do it humiliate me and arrest me because I broke their "campus law", but in the end I'll walk free when they realize that they can't do anything about it. The more likely situation is that they tell me to leave, or put the gun in a car etc.

That is not true. Campuses have their own administrative proceedings that would be used to expel a student who was caught with a firearm on campus. Additionally, once expelled from one school, you would most likely never be admitted to any other school. The practical consequence is that you'd never have any way to earn a college education. Courts are very unwilling to intervene in these administrative matters, so you'd likely get no relief there, either.

Needless to say, these sorts of incidents can cast a shadow on your life forever. I would never carry a gun on a university campus, so long as I was enrolled as a student.

These campus codes of conduct affect off-campus behavior as well. You'd be shocked at how many futures have been ruined by one act of stupidity + one administrator willing to throw the book at the student.

I DO have a daughter in college and I am a big fan of tasers.

One of her room mates last year had some mace and another one got it out and sprayed it in the room. She thought it was hair spray or some kind of perfume and maced herself pretty good. (you can't make this stuff up) It was a suite of rooms with 4 separate bedrooms. The short story is that they cleared the entire suite with everyone coughing and gagging because one girl sprayed mace in one of the bedrooms.

Mace inside a building gets EVERYONE without any preference as to who is the bad guy.

Then there is the story of my wife's grandpa macing himself with her mace on her keychain.

    Tasers. That's my vote.
