If you go full screen, it sure looks likes the rifleman shoots. You can see the smoke from the end of his barrel.
Also seems that the closer officer doesn't have the right angle to shoot being that low on the trunk of the car.

According to the write up the officer waited until the hostage was pushed into the car.

Had to be pretty goofy to think he was going to get out of there ok. Excellent police work, sad the officers have to do it but there it is.

To avoid being shot in the head I recommend not taking hostages. One less bad guy is a good thing. As far as the play by play, that's probably about what I'd have said under those circumstances.
Edit: I'd have not posted it like that, in the edited version I'd provide an excellent synopsis, free of profanity.

You would think that would be pretty self-explanatory, much like if you don't like getting shocked, don't **** on the electric fence. Unfortunately, some people lack the requisite single-digit number of working brain cells to figure that much out.

I saw that in the public affairs release. Pretty clear from the video that it's incorrect. Maybe the robber was trying to push her into the car, or that's what the officers thought, but she was still standing outside the car when she became a non-hostage.

Just watched it full screen and I think you and Alamo are correct. There does appear to be smoke from the rifle right before he pans away.

I was interested to see all the traffic passing in the background, some of it quite close. But at the link in this story Robbery suspect shot dead by Irving police - Story | KDFW it looks like the rifle-toting cop had the Cash Store front wall (stone façade?) as back drop, which is another point in favor of the rifle-cop taking the shot, rather than the one with the pistol (who had moving traffic as back stop).
