Nev'r seen the hype for this place(Mexico)........I ain't lost nuth'n there.......

I agree. Went to Cancun one time on my one and only cruise that my wife roped me into. Spent the whole time looking over my shoulder.

There is more to see and do in the USA like Detroit, Chicago, & D.C. :ar15: :D :ingo:

People become complacent and trust these places are safe because "everyone I know has came back alive and well and said how safe they were", but it only takes once and these resorts are becoming a very high value target. Besides the key employees who interact in the front of the house, many do not even speak English nor care about your well being. Which will they choose over you? A meager weeks salary or a cash bonus offer from a low level drug dealer trying to make extra cash for his group?
When you become aware of the real world you won't want to travel far period. Reasoning with others based on fact just labels you a tin foiler. Let them get what they get. One day they will.

I have never been a big fan of Cancun but I think the Akumal area 90 mins south of Cancun is absolutely beautiful and my favorite place to go. You have the beaches from Corona commercials, great snorkeling and diving, Mayan ruins, and Cenotes that have been on National Geographic. I have never felt unsafe in the Akumal area at all! I'll take it over inner city Indy any day.

There is a reason the tour guides tell you NOT to get into a cab unless they call the cab and escort you to get into that cab. these places are awful, the tiny economy of the port city is based soley on tourism, and yeah they do what they can to keep you safe but you are so close to death you have no idea, its crazy

When I have to travel even in the u.s. here's just 2 things that I do for security.
    1. If a hotel worker knocks on my door I make them show me their work ID through the door. Then I verify them through the front desk phone and state they are at my door just to verify purpose.

    2. When taking a MARKED cab I check the permit and license and verify the picture matches the paperwork (which must be visible to you), then I casualty say high what's your name? Never get into an unmarked cab. They are illegal in most places anyways.

I mention them since you touched on it. If anyone is planning on traveling outside the United States please visit the state departments website for travel advisories And safety tips or call them. There are many places average travelers would not think are high risk that are! Safe travels!

I just want to add a third tip. Never surrender your passport to ANYONE, and keep it on your person at all times. Even if your swimming in the ocean there are ways to keep it on you. Do it.

Heh, I got into a car with someone in Mexico to take me to a fishing village (place we stopped was in the middle of nowhere). I was too hungover to really care about making conversation. I may have died in southern Mexico that day but I'm not sure.

I love Mexico. I've been to cancan a couple times, went south to playa del carmen and took the ferry to Cozumel and drank some very questionable tequila. Checked out chicken itza and the ruins at tulum.

My wife and I went to puerto vallarta for our honeymoon and did that place up right.

I would not go back there now though. IMO, the best parts of Mexico are off the beaten path which is exactly where you shouldn't be right now. Zip lining in the jungle, going through caves and hiking in the mountains are where it's at. The fun you can have at the touristy hotel strips could be had in the Bahamas or St Thomas or even Jamaica.

Well it's sounds to me like the Englewood neighborhood schools of Chicago must have been on Spring Break.

16-year-old killed in Gage Park, 3 others wounded across city - chicagotribune.com

Let's see, Chicago only had 4 shootings yesterday evening between 1:30 and 9pm. Only 4 and that's before the crack heads hit it hard!

Mexico is no more dangerous than the US. You wouldn't go walk around Englewood on the Southside of Chicago, or anywhere in Gary other than Miller Beach or 40th and Post Rd in Indy.

I like Mexico and will be heading there twice in the next month and a half. I hate chicago and I'm going to be going there twice int he same time frame. I'm far more concerned going to Chicago than Mexico. In Mexico they shoot other drug dealers and informants. In Chicago they shoot and beat whitey for being white and I'm white.

Seven shot at Mr. G's club in Gresham neighborhood

Seven people were shot during a rap music party at Mr. G's Entertainment Center in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side early Thursday morning, authorities say.

Three gunmen opened fire after a fight broke out shortly after 1 a.m. as the party at the club at 87th Street and Ashland Avenue was winding down, according to Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro. It wasn't clear if any of the wounded were the shooters, he said.........

The most dangerous thing about traveling in Mexico,is that you may not have access to impartial legal assistance if you truly need it.Folks..it is not the USA.
