Nev'r seen the hype for this place(Mexico)........I ain't lost nuth'n there.......
There is a reason the tour guides tell you NOT to get into a cab unless they call the cab and escort you to get into that cab. these places are awful, the tiny economy of the port city is based soley on tourism, and yeah they do what they can to keep you safe but you are so close to death you have no idea, its crazy
When I have to travel even in the u.s. here's just 2 things that I do for security.
1. If a hotel worker knocks on my door I make them show me their work ID through the door. Then I verify them through the front desk phone and state they are at my door just to verify purpose.
2. When taking a MARKED cab I check the permit and license and verify the picture matches the paperwork (which must be visible to you), then I casualty say high what's your name? Never get into an unmarked cab. They are illegal in most places anyways.
I mention them since you touched on it. If anyone is planning on traveling outside the United States please visit the state departments website for travel advisories And safety tips or call them. There are many places average travelers would not think are high risk that are! Safe travels!
I just want to add a third tip. Never surrender your passport to ANYONE, and keep it on your person at all times. Even if your swimming in the ocean there are ways to keep it on you. Do it.
Heh, I got into a car with someone in Mexico to take me to a fishing village (place we stopped was in the middle of nowhere). I was too hungover to really care about making conversation. I may have died in southern Mexico that day but I'm not sure.
going there in the near future may have to reconsider if this keeps up
