Text in red is my edit to show the additional answers I found online from various state, NRA and other sources.
I am thinking of going to MI in the near future speciallify the Waren Dunes State Park for camping.
I have a valid LTCH from Indiana.

Looking at this am I reading it right?
    http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/michigan.pdf

    Travel from IN to MI
    with sidearm CC is OK
with longgun is :dunno: (Can it be loaded?)
In order to transport or possess rifles and shotguns in a motor vehicle, Michigan law requires that they be unloaded and be one or more of the following: broken down, enclosed in a case, carried in the trunk of the vehicle, or inaccessible from the interior of the vehicle.
    SOURCE: Michigan Gun Laws

    At MI State Park
    with sidearm CC is OK
ONLY if you have a sidearm license either from MI or your own state of residence.
SOUCRE: MCRGO - Frequently Asked Questions about Michigan Gun Laws

with longgun is :dunno: (Can it be loaded?)

MUST inform officer about weapons AT THE START of interaction.
List of :nono: places similar to Indiana except it's a no go for bars.
Plus signs DO hold the weight of law.

Going for work soon. That is the way I read it for handguns. I don't know about rifles.

Wasn't there recently a case of a young man in Michigan involving carry of a rifle? I think it is posted here on INGO and worked out in his favor.

Last I checked, you can't carry a loaded long arm in your vehicle in Michigan. IIRC, it's a DNR thingy.

But, don't go by my memory. Make a few calls up there to get it sorted out.

MI recognizes our LTCH, however, as others have said. So, a handgun is fine subject to MI's caveats about prohibited places, duty to inform, and such.

Michigan, for outsiders, is Concealed carry only.

"State" residents can open carry. With or without a permit, but NOT in a car.

As for long guns. While driving through the state, in the trunk, ammo seperate, and the rifle MUST be in a lockable case.

If you get pulled over, keep hands on the wheel, and before you even say hello, inform them that you are carrying. Otherwise they can say you did not inform in time.

I live in indiana, but can throw a rock and hit michigan. I travel there almost every other hour. The first thing I did when I moved here was stop at the michigan state police station and ask the laws.

I went to Michigan once, way up there in middle of nowhere. I was going to take an AR but decided against it just because the long gun laws are a little weird. Just took a couple handguns. YMMV. :twocents:

Problem with Michigan is it's been dominated by Detroit for a looooong time. This is one reason I'm not too saddened by Detroit's significant recent downturn.
The gun folks in Michigan need to get much more aggressive and get some things changed.
    Have a nice trip.

OK so when traveling from IN to MI the long gun must be unloaded and in LOCKED case.
What about when I get to my destination in MI and put a tent up in the state park?
Does the longgun need to remain in the car in case locked?

Ermm... Kinda answered your own question there chief... :):

I've never camped in michigan so I don't know the laws pertaining to long guns other then transporting them.

Seeing as the MI State Parks comes under the DNR, it seems a call to the DNR to inquire about long gun policy would be appropriate.

The problem that michigan has (with loaded rifles in vehicles) is that poachers are a constant agrivation.

Call the DNR like suggested, they might just give you a flat NO, but legally if you keep it unloaded seperate from ammo you should be fine.

I am originally from Michigan, now Indiana. Not sure how laws have changed in 8 years, but typically long guns were unloaded and closed in case -- not locked -- when traveling. Essentially an anti-poacher regulation. Handguns, reciprocity on CCW but must inform LEO. In a park, I would call them and check.

I don't have the URL but I would advise that you visit the Michigan State Police website and search out the page they have on reciprocity. I have carried a copy in my glovebox ever since a particularly unpleasant encounter with an ignorant sheriff's deputy in my home county. Served me right for calling the police for being the victim of a theft I guess...

Really? do you have a cite for this whole "no non-resident oc" theory of yours? I grew up in Michigan and still spend as much time there as possible. Unless something has drastically in the last year, Michigan law is silent on OC. That means it is not illegal to OC
Long guns: If you have a loaded long gun "in the field" you better have a hunting license. Also when they are being transported they must be unloaded and either inaccessible from the passenger compartment, or in a locked case. The DNR is pretty firearm friendly and I cannot find any rule prohibiting possession in a campground https://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/IC3003-1_Park_Rules_Poster_452370_7.pdf
Here's a thread on non-resident open carry on the Michigan Open Carry website. Non-resident open-carry.

Oh, and no booze while carrying, period. It is a crime to be under the influence and carry. For carrying "under the influence" is a really low number

Here's a thread on non-resident open carry on the Michigan Open Carry website. Non-resident open-carry.

I did not specify state only. I only typed what I knew as to not give misinformation. I know state residents can open carry, did not know if out of state people can.

I realize putting state in quotations might seem misleading, and I apologize, was not my intention.

I have a somewhat related question about Michigan; What is law regarding a handgun, locked in a vehicle, on school property?

I found this from their state police website...

    Pistol Free Areas

Individuals licensed to carry a concealed pistol by Michigan or another state are prohibited from carrying a concealed pistol or a portable device that uses electo-muscular disruption technology on the following premises:
Please refer to MCL 28.425o for the complete statutory text

Schools or school property but may carry while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian

Public or private day care center, public or private child caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.

    Sports arena or stadium

A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises

Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship, unless the presiding official or officials allow concealed weapons

An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more

    A hospital

A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university

    A Casino

"Premises" does not include the parking areas of the places listed above.

So if I read this right, a gun in a school's parking lot is NOT prohibited because a parking lot doesn't count as school "premises"?

So why do they need to say you may carry in a vehicle on school property when picking up or dropping off?

My son will be playing in several baseball tournaments this summer in Michigan. Most of games take place at high school fields.
