Driving an empty rear wheel drive box truck on a hilly road with 6 inches of snow aged everyone at least three years this morning. No salt and no snow plows made the trip dangerous. At least a half dozen times the truck almost went off the road. The fastest we could drive on the road was 15 mph and even that was dangerous.

At the last minute, we decided to go in one vehicle instead of three because of the heavy snow. The risk of an ambush was felt to be less and we could not spare to have two or more vehicles damaged or stuck.

Pinto beans and red wheat is what we had to get. They were very generous in the amounts they gave in the containers we brought. They also had a case of MRE’s for each of us for emergency foods. We all dipped our fingers, and we were heading home. No trading shops or stands were yet set up because of the weather. Several people waved at us as we drove home so the return trip was friendly. A few other vehicles helped cut a rut to improve traction on the return home, but we didn’t pass any of them. The next crew will return to the pickup point as soon as the box truck is unloaded. The ruts in the snow will make the next trip easier and faster.

Crew two helped unload and we brief them on the roads and town situation. At the last minute we decided to send a pickup with the truck because the roads were better and everyone will be out and a little extra protection makes sense.

Five miles away the bodies of the Judge and his secretary lay in a ditch covered in snow. Just down the hill were seven other bodies that the new crew of power hungry thugs has raided and killed for food, fuel and shelter over the last week. The Judge was different, he was the hunter and they knew they were next on his hit list. He lived alone on the edge of town and they shot him with an arrow as he unlocked his home.

The four thugs felt safe. He hated that his girlfriend was also dead, but she should not have taken all the drugs he gave her as fast as she did. He knew it would not be long before he had another girl friend.

Tonight, they are going to see who else is in the area for supplies they will need. They have enough food for about two months if they don’t eat too much. The log cabin they have has plenty of propane, firewood and soon food for them to weather the long winter. Louis told the others that in about 6 months when it warms up, they will head south and fit in with the other residents in Texas or Alabama. They will leave this cold weather behind and find a new market to sell their drugs and find people to raid.

Crew two arrived at the food pick up point. Things were much more tense that the first time. Many of the local residents were angry that no bags or containers were provided. The team loaded up and did the finger dip. Threats were tossed at them and they wasted no time in the town. They returned by 3 PM and it was almost dark. The brightest is got today was a bright twilight and everyone was concerned about how much less light was reaching the ground. It could just be the cloud cover or the fine ash has really hit the upper atmosphere. Even John wasn’t getting accurate data. Short of an emergency, no contact will be made with the town. It was obvious to everyone things are going to get worse as the snow builds and the temperature fall. Desperation will force people to become violent and life in the town is going to dangerous.

Emphasis on security and keeping low key for the next few weeks is critical. When the town runs out of food, they are going to come looking for ours. Distance and weather are in our favor. Fuel is running low for everyone and 8 miles on hilly roads covered with snow that is not salted or plowed is a big problem for them. The weather is turning fast and extreme cold is going to keep people inside.

The wind was picking up and snow started to fall again. Several of us walked around outside to make sure the lights from the trailers or house could not be seen down by the road. The front OP site was visited and I gave them rice and beans for the evening meal. The new rear OP site needs some work or it will be too cold for the person doing watch duty. How long we can staff the OP sites depends on how cold it gets.

I hung up the parka and walked into the family room of the house. Many of the people I saw in town today will most likely be dead in less than 2 months. The weather is going to shut down any new food deliveries and we are now on our own.

Louis and the other thugs like the plan they had put together. If it works, it will make sure they have enough food and other needed “supplies”. They will wait till about noon tomorrow to implement the plan. They are going to destroy the town electrical substation. The loss of power and the timing of the big winter storm are just too perfect to pass up. The town will be easy picking after a few days and they will be kings!

Craig and his family arrived ahead of schedule at were honking at the gate at 9:30 PM. I wish he would have called, but cell phones are spotty in our area. My son provided cover as I walked down the tree line to the gate. When I knew it was safe, I signaled him and walk up and shook his hand. He was ok, tired and wanted to talk, but I said let’s get everything up to the house. We agreed the best place to park the motor home is to the side of the garage. Things were rushed and I wanted to move the car and get them inside quickly. As they drove by, I counted 4 people but only three vehicles. The oldest car must have broken down.

They parked and started to unpack and get to see if anything had shifted during the trip. We stopped them and said to come in and relax. We have plenty of time for unpacking at first light.

The news was not good on Fox but they were giving ideas on how to prepare. CNN was in freak-out mode and trying to get people into a panic. MSNBC was off the air, but to be honest, who cared. Five channels on Dish network were covering ways to store water, food and prepare your home for the disaster. I had a good laugh when I noticed they were on the porn channels that were taken off the air for this crisis. Still people are in shock at the way this disaster in developing.

From the reports and tracking data we have now about 9 days to get ready. Yesterday it was 11 days, and I think that change will push people into a panic if the date changes again. The camera on the dish network satellite is still showing the image of the earth and the cloud band is growing on the southern hemisphere. They also have added the image from the other side of the Earth and you get a better view of the disaster area. I put post it notes on the tv screen to show the location of the cloud for my own tracking. My son is taking pictures of the screen every hour and making a slideshow of it moving and expanding.

The Sherriff decided when he found blood at the Judges home he would have some of the residents post guards at the water and sewer plants. He had only said to the town that he was missing, but when his secretary was also missing, he knew the preemptive justice plan had been uncovered. The bad guys figured it out and were seeking revenge on what remained of the law.

The substation on the edge of town was also a target and he gave the family next to it a rifle to defend it. They were keeping an eye on it and strung a wire from the barb wire on top of the fence to a bell in the home. Two other families in the area would also help out if shots were fired and from their windows they cover the area around the substation.

Guard duty was boring since the wind was blowing the snow and the temps where in the low teens. Wind-chill made it much worse on those outside.

Before the thugs left, they had cleaned and reloaded the three guns they had. They were going to shoot the lock off the gate and shut down the substation from the control shed. After it was shut down, they were going to damage it with two axes, toss some cable over the wires and dump the oil from the transformers. When that was done they were going to restart it and let the electricity fry it so it can’t be repaired.

The cold and dim light had slowed the walk from the woods to the edge of town. No one was outside and they were all very cold from the trip. The plans changed and they decided to beat the lock off the gate instead of shoot it. Seven hits with the axe, and the chain and lock fell to the frozen ground.

Each of them had fallen about 50 times during the trip over to the substation. Louis was third in line as they walked into the fenced area of the substation. The two guys in front of him both fell and he tripped over them. He was laughing at them to get up, but he got concerned when zip –snap sound rush by him and saw David fall backwards into the snow. David took a hit to the neck and blood was foaming out of his neck. From another spot he could hear shooting but over the wind it was hard to tell from where.
Louis picked up his rifle and started shooting at the homes over the rise the gunfire was coming from. While he was shooting to the North, a shot from the east headed towards him. A soft point round from a suppressed .308 rifle the Sherriff had loaned to the pastors family hit him in the pelvis. The bone exploded and the bullet did massive damage to lower intestine and colon. He screamed and collapsed in the snow. Two more rounds from a scoped 30-30 rifle found him as he tried to get behind the first two thugs that were shot. The shooting stopped.

Pastor Martin burst into the second floor bedroom when he heard the rifle cycling while he was reading the Bible in his bedroom. His thirteen year old son, Jacob was shooting the rifle from the sand bag on the ledge of the open window. Five shell casings were on his bedspread and when he looked out the window, there were four bodies next to the control building at the substation. Pastor Martin figured out what was going on and handed his son another mag. He told him to put two more rounds into each of them and we will wait till the snow is not melting on their exposed skin before we check on them. Eight shots later he closed up the window and asked if his son was ok. His son signed back that he was “OK”.

Thirty minutes after the first shot, the Sherriff was looking over the bodies and knew at least two of them were on his list. Louis was still alive, but not for long. His legs and hip were hamburger and he lost too much blood to try to save him. The other two had taken head shots from the deaf thirteen year old kid in the wheel chair, and he had no clue who they were. They decided to let the cold finish Louis. He walked over to the Pastors home and gave the young man a Deputy Badge. He shook his hands and had his Dad sign “You alone saved the town today, and we all thank you”. Jacob smiled and moved his wheelchair back to the window to watch the substation.

Several residents set out to follow the tracks from the four thugs back into the woods. Later that day they returned and told the Sherriff where they were holding up. When the weather breaks, they are going to bring back all the items they have stolen from others and put them to good use for the town.

The news for the town this afternoon was good, the news around the world was looking to be worse than anyone had imagined. Many countries were already filtering and shutting down parts of the internet. News of riots, looting and death were shut down in minutes or never posted. Some false stories and information were being posted to weaken or confuse people or entire nations.

“It looks like a snow ball” said the system supervisor at Dish Network. They ran the images in a loop from the day of the first eruption to now. The grey white ash and clouds completely cover the planet. The density has not changed in two days and is not diminishing. They sent the video file to NASA and went back to work.
