I am thinking Skylights and UV lighting for real Food stuffs...

I mean if one can grow Weed in a Closet, how hard can it be to do Vegetables like that?!

Besides I am not a big fan of eating Fungus...

Yeah, but if it's going to get cold enough to freeze the poop tank, then it's going to be hard to keep anything thawed out topside. It would take a lot of firewood to keep the house or greenhouse from freezing.

You could dig a deep shaft down to your sub basement, and line it with mirrors in order to catch the sun at all different times of the day.

You'd need several to grow any kind of decent amount of food. It would also be easier to insulate since you'd have large columns of air between you and the outside. Even more so if there was a vacuum in the shaft.

    Just spit ballin here.

Kinda what I was thinking as well...

You would be surprised at far you can move Sunlight with Mirrors...

Not to mention the Light in the Living areas would be a huge Benefit to Morale.

The Sherriff, the State Trooper and the Judge held an impromptu meeting to discuss crime in the county. Things are getting worse and even the rural county is about to break open. Three officers have been killed by attacks and one from fatigue that caused an auto accident. Most of the officers are about to walk off, if conditions don’t change. They all agreed the law cannot fail during this disaster. Each had the lists and maps to discuss with each other. They all knew they already could go to jail for just having this meeting.

About 50% of the names made each of the three lists and those would be the first issues to correct. Everyone’s top 5 lists were the same, and in the next 24 hours those individuals would be dead. Everyone was in agreement this has to happen, or lawlessness will rock the county. Three of the five were daytime drunks and would not be a threat to any of the officers making the visit. One will be a drug overdose, the second will be a fall and the last will be accident while fixing a car. None of the deaths are to look like a crime. The other two are husband and wife, and have a history of fights. They will be a murder/suicide. They joked the “Star Chamber” didn’t have enough voting members, but these are tough times and people are going to die if these trouble makers are not stopped.

All three agreed on the course of action, and felt sick, the law has to act preemptively. The fates of the criminals were sealed and they would meet again after the first five were gone. The two police officers wasted no time to pay a visit to the first two persons to face preemptive justice. Twenty minutes later one was dying from a drug overdose and the other fell from the back porch two stories down to the concrete patio. He didn’t die right away, only his neck was broken and his esophagus was crushed. The officer waited until he stopped breathing and left. The third drunk was already dead when he was paid a visit. He was dead in his chair, with a candle burning on the coffee table. One piece of paper was placed on the top of the candle and the visitor left; knowing that all that trash in the room would be on fire in a few minutes. No one was around when the trailer erupted in smoke, and fire. In the morning, the trailer was a burnt out frame with a charred body lying on the ground.

Two hours later the couple the locals called the “want to be” Bonnie and Clyde were dead. The police responded to a domestic complaint from a concerned citizen. Knowing they had drugs and stolen goods in the house they did not allow entry for the police to investigate. Also, not expecting the police to show up, the meth lab was in plain view and the two tried to shoot at the tank to get it to explode. The officers did not take kindly to the turn of events and for 10 minutes a full blown battle was waged. The police lost both cars to the gunfire and “Bonnie and Clyde” were dead from the fire started from the tear gas and bullets cutting the propane line. When the police investigators returned in the morning, they discovered an opening to a root cellar that held over 200 pounds of meth and cocaine. What was left of the two burned bodies was found in the bedroom. He also sadly noted both died from numerous bone shattering wounds and did not feel the heat of the fire.

Mike the mailman noticed the two smoke clouds as he drove back from what was most likely his last day of work. Both were at places the post office map had marked as problem sites. With a smile on his face, he drove back faster to prepare for what backlash was about to happen. His efforts to get the red list to the Judge, the Sherriff and the one State Trooper in the county had started to pay off.

In the far corner of the county at about 11 PM, another group was talking about this same subject, but there were more concerned about gathering the food, guns and some babe’s for entertainment. The six members of the newly created wolf pack were planning who they should hit in the next few days. They laughed as they drank, and even used the most recent yearbook as a selection tool for the weekend entertainment.

The Sherriff and the Trooper were watching the house from the tree line. Both were shocked at what they heard from 50 feet away. They had followed target number 6 to this place hours ago waiting to strike. The others planning this event were not even on any of the lists, but they knew they had to hit now. Both noticed a strong chill in the air and picked out the first targets. Those inside the house did not have clue they all would be dead in about 2 minutes.

The officers shot through the sliding glass door at the six hoodlums sitting at the kitchen table planning who to pillage and plunder. The six teenagers and 20 something’s had placed all the weapons on the coffee table or against the door frames, thinking they were safe at this place. The blasts from 2 semi-auto shotguns simply destroyed them all above the chest as they sat. Both of the officers had angled the shots so any of the buckshot that missed the closest would hit those behind them. They left a bloody mess and didn’t even go into the home. All it took was one match to set some of the trash on the porch on fire. In just a few minutes the house should burning and no fire department will show up before it is fully involved in fire. The shotguns were from the recovered weapons inventory from robberies and the paperwork in these troubling times was not keeping up the items in this room. In a few minutes they will be at the bottom of the river after being taken apart and tossed in different areas.

11 trouble makers are out of the picture, and at least 8 of them were about to do serious harm. The Judge was happy at the timing of the actions and that innocent lives have been saved. By 3 AM, the next 10 in line were selected. This time, they are all going to look like they just pulled up and left the area. The Judge showed the others the old septic tank that would be perfect for these people located at the corner an abandoned county home. The tank was half filled with black water and smelled bad. He made the service opening wider, so that dumping the bodies would be much faster. After each of the 10 was “arrested”, they were to be drugged with the cocaine from the recent find and tossed into the tank to drown. It has to look like a drug hit. He was going to cement the opening shut and cover it over with dirt.

The scanner was alive tonight, while the group was talking by the campfire they listened to reports over the air. Three fires in 15 hours and several home invasions up at the edge of town.

Mailman Mike was having his retirement celebration at the campfire. Hot dogs, marsh mellows and beer was his treat for the night. He retired since the mail was being discontinued for five of the six delivery days, from decreased volume and shortages of fuel. He remains on call, but doubts the phone will ring. The main reason was it was just too dangerous and he is letting the invincible young take over the mail delivery. His wife gave him a big hug and at the same time the sky lit of from an explosion from the direction of the fire being talked about on the scanner. The watched glow die down and the voice on the scanner said the propane tank at the house exploded. A second alarm was called out for the home on Snake Hollow Road. Mike smiled, knowing another location on the red list was erased.

Craig changed the subject when the scanner said they found a man dead behind his home, from an apparent fall. “Too much is happening too fast” was his take on the events of the day. “I’d bet scores are being settled on both sides as we sit by the fire”. Two of the adults volunteered for additional guards for the night, after filling up on dogs and sugar. The mood changed from laughter to a few becoming outright concerned.

The talk shifted to who has caused problems in town or in the area. No one in the group had a criminal past, and most are church going, so everyone thought they should be low on the revenge list. However, several in the area have noticed a lot of traffic into the place and might think we have being hoarding. If they didn’t think that today, they will in the morning, when John and his family show up with at least 5 trailers of gear and equipment.

An informal vote was taken to shift to a low key operation after the trailer and the sea containers are set. Too much traffic is creating attention that we don’t need. Carrie liked the idea that we would stay together and prepare for the long winter.
The talk shifted again to the strike on Beth’s home. Why was Sally Garrett so interested in that place? The reason remains a mystery and several of us are starting to wonder if that group wanted to hit us. To reduce the risk to all of us from a future attack, those taking up watch now had ak-47’s or ar-15’s. Bolt actions would be too slow if a larger group attacked.

The retirement party ran out of steam by 1AM. Soon after, not a light was on and it was the darkest night the watchmen had yet experienced. In the distance, gunfire was heard from several directions. The sounds of gunshots continued all night in groups of two’s or three’s.

Craig had the morning shift for the front gate over watch. He enjoyed watching two dogs wander around for food. They were pulling on trash at the burnt out car at Beth’s place. The dogs were seen running off with what looked like a leg. He decided not to waste a bullet since they were doing a good deed.

John arrived at about 10 AM. He showed up with everything he said his family would bring. I thought the helicopter in the distance was too much, but John wanted to be safe. He got on the radio and the helicopter pilot said goodbye, and went back to the north. The park trailer septic tank was dug and in a day or two, the entire trailer site should be completed. His oldest son was missing, and said he was staying with his in-laws, since they needed protection. I could tell that was not what John wanted.

Most of the work was done on the back side of the hill, so no one could see what was going on. Noise was a different story, but many others in the area were busy with chain saws, log splitters and farm equipment getting ready for the long winter. The noise blended in and no one noticed.

The Judge and the Sherriff went looking for the Trooper. They found him sleeping in his squad car, the battery was dead. He was exhausted from runs last night and they gently woke him up in his squad car. The Trooper told the other two that three of the 10 were found dead from gunshots. Someone else is out settling scores, and at the moment, they didn’t see that as a problem. The chain of events gave them a chance to wait a day or two, on the remainder of the list. They seem to be doing just fine thinning the heard without the help of the law.

The Sherriff talked about the order he was given by the Prison Bureau. The entire staff knew the order was coming. He was instructed to let release the prisoners he felt were nonviolent and who had families. Single prisoners or violent offenders were another issue. They were not to be let go. Several ideas were discussed and the best method selected. The exhaust from the emergency generator will be rerouted into the jail and the ventilation system will be shut off and the vents sealed from the outside. They will run the unit for at least 8 hours, and then let the building remain sealed for another 24 hours.

The order came directly from the President and was being carried out in every prison in the nation. The Sherriff guessed about 1.5 million prisoners were going to die in the next day or two.

John had an informal meeting with all his new neighbors and introduced his wife and kids. After the introductions were done, be violated his security clearance and told everyone what he learned this morning. He told them almost 2 million prisoners will be executed in the next 24 hours. They pose a direct internal threat to the survival of the nation. The prison resources are going to be directed towards other needs for the survival of the country. This order is also in addition to the executive order signed by the President two days ago to authorize the use of preemptive actions on known criminals who are outside of the correctional facilities. That executive order has a two week time limit and requires a review by the Judge and Sherriff of each county. Over the next two weeks another 300,000 to 500,000 criminals will be dealt with.

The last part of his meeting was not known or even suspected by anyone else in the group! He told everyone, the information he was about to share, cannot leave this group. He informed everyone, that less than 4% of the population of the earth will survive this crisis. Best estimates for the United States is less than 7% of the country will survive. If we all work together, every one of us will survive.

Within the month, the weather will be as cold January. On average the temperatures will be 25 to 30 degrees below average for 12 months. There will not be a summer next year, and the year after, the summer is in doubt. Those numbers were revised after the last eruption. If another eruption happens, less than 1% of the world’s population will survive.

I have some good news. We have enough spray foam and building materials to super insulate our trailer, this home and one of the other camping trailers. The house will be the central life pod of the group if things get really bad. It will not be pretty, but the homes should be able to weather the coldest days.

The dirty work starts as soon as the meeting is over.

Anyone else thinking this would make a great movie?

    ok I need
3 cameras preferably red 4k but a nice panay(not panaflex,25k a day, but panasonic) would do(already have camera operators) or we could do dslr route
    enought actors
    foleys
sound crew(could try to get my brother and his equipment)
    cg artists
Im thinking prop and set would be the most expensive part of this thing
    :rockwoot::ingo:INGO Productions:rockwoot:

*unless anyone else is thinking this*
It would make a great complement to the disaster films Hollywood produces as it is could show the reality of the situation.

wow. I'm glad there's not more posts in here, cuz I'd be late for class if there were.

Not sure if this is what you're going for, but it reads like a screenplay to me. If this gets made, I do have some acting experience. nudge, nudge.

PS, I need to spread Rep around or some BS like that... :dunno:

Over the next rise, Mr. Jackson is sitting in this 30 year old trailer home. On the table are empty containers of medications. They ran out two days ago. In less that 4 days his problem habits will return. He will not be able to control his impulses and he doesn’t want to hurt anyone else. He has not been in trouble for 20 years. The urges are starting to grow in his mind. He walks back to the top of this hill with his telescope. It has been enjoying watching all the activities and new people working over at the neighbor’s house.

Judge Wilson was having a meeting with the County Health Department Supervising Physician asking about those who take psychotic medications. He is aware of about 40 in the county and most of them should not be a problem. The Doctor said he will look over the reporting database for the serious cases and get the last known addresses to the Judge. The Judge wanted to get some type of order together before these people ran out of medications and became a threat to the area.

The mechanic took about three hours to build the pipe from the generator back into the ventilation system intake at the jail. The officer selected a older man who’s wife was killed a few years back from a drunk, and knew he had a low opinion of criminals. To him it was a job, and way to get back at all those who had taken his wife of 32 years. In his mind, he was not the one starting the generator, so he could sleep tonight. He even offered his bobcat to dig a grave for them all.

At lights out, they started the countdown. In 45 minutes they would start the generator and let it run for at least 8 hours. The recording system for the cameras is already turned off and the guards have been moved outside the building. No one wanted to see or hear what was about to happen. They were thankful; they didn’t have to shoot them. The Correctional officers knew that this was being done at every prison, to every criminal that too dangerous to be release. Several wondered to each other just how serious this long winter is going to be.

A few minutes before the time was up, the Judge showed up to push the start button on the generator. The unit started and after it warmed up, they switched the exhaust path back into the jail ventilation system. Three inmates noticed a diesel smell, but that had happened before when a garbage truck parked next to the air intake. They didn’t think much of it and everyone fell asleep.

CNN broke in on the TV with a claim the winter is going to be much worse than reported. They had AL Gore and two other experts saying there was a cover up and that the nation was at great risk. They started to show graphs and a chart explaining how much dust was in the atmosphere and how much sunlight it would reflect. The powers that be had denials and no comments concerning this report and said it was just Al being outspoken again. Several of us just looked at John and said we have less than a few days before some more smart people start running the numbers in other parts of the world. Panic will sweep the nation. Instead of starting some of the projects in the morning, it was decided to start tonight. The ladies said Fox was breaking in with similar stories and that it appears the Government was hiding information. The only thing that prevented a panic was that it was now 3 in the morning and most of the people were asleep. That would change after the curfew ends.

Another cold night helped with getting more work done. Moving the sheet metal and studs to the buildings was not that hard with the lights and the cold air. When the morning breaks, they were going to start getting the buildings and trailers ready from spraying. The setup is the hard part of the job spraying is nothing but fast movements of the wrist and arms.

Mr. Jackson watched the busy bees working on moving 5 gallon pails, metal bars and metal sheets to different places around the trailers. He laid out a sleeping bag to help keep him warm What got his attention the most, was the ladies were not being watched.

Most of the jail guards were sent home. The Judge and the Sherriff talked about when they would vent out the jail and burry the bodies. For the next week or so, the site will be closed to visitors and that should make it easier to clean it up and convert it to a shelter. They will tell all the families of the dangerous prisoners they have been relocated and the Federal Government is dealing with the jail population. Information on where they are will follow in the next few weeks.

Two of the guards for the other prepared group down the road where on a walking patrol of the gravel road and stopped to take a rest and play with the gen one night vision system they had. Both were very quiet and noticed a light on top of the hill about 700 feet away. The light was on for about 10 seconds and the night vision was not good enough to see what was on the hill top. One clicked his FRS, 4 times and the base clicked two times in return. They decided to see who was watching on a hill top that was owned by one of the members of their group. They both talked about the hippie lives about 1,000 feet from that place, but didn't think it was him. He just hides in his trailer. Best guess it might be outsiders watching all the activity at the other group.

Mr. Jackson could not own guns, but he had a very nice crossbow and compound bow to hunt. He carries his crossbow around mainly for dogs and to keep the troublemaker kids away. They tease him when they see him washing at the pond, behind his trailer and near the gravel road. They better not come back in a few days, because he will not be nice to them.

They could smell a very dirty person up at the hill. The smell was not hard to identify, with the breeze in their faces. The night vision showed an unnatural shape, but they are going to have to move closer. The guards moved about 20 feet and covered each as they climbed the hill. The target was about 40 feet away and they could tell he was using a spotting scope and had a weapon pointed towards all the noise over at the other groups home. One of them knocked a log loose and it rolled about 10 feet and stopped at a tree stump by the other. The target stood up, pointed his weapon at the noise and made some barking sounds. Mr. Jackson fired his cross bow at the noise and was very surprised to hear a man’s voice say “I’m Hit, I’m Hit. He saw a flashlight point at him from about 20 feet to the right and felt a sting in his chest and the wind knocked out of him. He spun around as he fell and his jaw was exploding in pain before he hit the ground.

6 shots rolled over the jobsite from the distant hill and all the men stopped working and grabbed their rifles and moved into the shadows. Those inside turned the lights off and hit the ground. 4 more shots and in the distance “I’m hit in the arm” could be heard.

it jumps around a lot making it a little hard to read and follow, but I like the story and find it very real.

I believe it is a story told from different perspectives of different characters throughout the story (minus narration of the writer)

Loving the story longbow.... not to jump off topic but did you get good news about the specialist meeting??

Carrie was team leader with two other ladies who had patrol duties today. Members of the other group had reached out to show us what all the noise was about. She met the two who were involved in the shooting last night. Several others from their group were there to see if anyone else was involved with the events of last night. Safety in numbers was the theme today, and most of the people were nervous that some mystery group was watching them. The meeting took place on the gravel road by the hill. Everyone walked up to the hill top to see what happened and run through the events of last night. The old hippie was dead with three gunshot wounds. He took a hit in the chest, jaw and neck and bled out. They put a trash bag over him to hide the damage and the group walked over to his trailer.

The trailer was clean and organized. He had about three or four months of food in his cabinets. The thing that caught everyone’s eye was the three empty pill containers on the table. Carrie said he was taking some heavy duty drugs to keep his mind healthy. Based on the dates on the containers, he was already having withdrawals from not taking these meds. Who knows what he was about to do or was planning when he was killed.

They grabbed two shovels from his shed and set off to dig his grave. Only Roger didn’t have to dig. He showed off his injury to the ladies. He took a crossbow bolt in the bicep and through the triceps, he should make a full recovery. When they were done, the placed all his food on the front porch and will drive back with the box truck to load up what should be saved.

They had already told the police about the events and they said just to bury him and secure his place. They didn’t have time to do a report, but would log it as a self-defense shooting. Dispatch said that anything that can be of use for the long winter should be taken. The rest of the site needs to be secured to prevent animal damage or hazards to others.

The ladies made it back by lunch time. We had some food for them and they inspected our work while eating the sandwiches. The metal studs had been screwed on the trailer and the new metal roof was already covering the top. The roof protected the 12 inches of spray foam insulation. When we are done, the trailer will look like a giant outdoor freezer that you would see at the back of a restaurant.

Two of the guys were up in my attic spay foaming above the rooms and almost to the roof trusses. When they are done, the exterior of the trailer and the airlock will be foamed. The windows are covered with plastic and a plug to cover the windows will be made. For now the windows don’t need to be covered, but the foam plug and the metal exterior will be waiting to cover the opening when it gets real cold. They used a metal strip to smooth the foam between the metal studs so that the exterior metal sheets would not be too warped. The foam cured up fast and the sprayers were well ahead of the sheeters for the project.

The ladies made a nice dinner and we rested for a few hours. Everyone had a job to do and time was limited. By midnight the second trailer was foamed and covered. It was decided to cover half of the windows without plugs since they were not needed and it would make it easier to heat the trailer. Great care was taken so that the furnace vent and air intakes were not damaged. A new Old Timer wood stove was also installed already and the vent was shielded with two layers of spaced metal sheeting to prevent it from damaging the foam or starting a fire.

After breakfast, the interior of my house will be gutted. We have decided to pull all the drywall from the exterior walls and remove the insulation. Then we are going to spray foam the walls and ceiling to hyper insulate the house. One side of the interior common walls will also be removed so that we can spray foam them also.

I looked at the temperature outside, before I went to bed, and it was 25 degrees.
