You don't understand - it's a big, beautiful we can all be proud of. Screw a trip to the Grand Canyon - go get you photo taken in front of the wall.

    Plus, it's got electrolytes.

Yeah. Sure. But is it organic?

As if Jeb didn't remind me of W enough, Kasich does too. I can't support someone like that.

Kasich? W? Nah. Romney perhaps, just a little, only less corporate. Kasich does seem to have a hint of "compassionate conservatism" like Bush, which is essentially code for neocon socialism.

Now that Carson and Fiorina are out, every one of the other candidates has experience in government - actually doing the work, not buying the results.

Yeah. Unh hunh. Santorum can't name any of Rubio's Senate accomplishments - POLITICO

"The former Pennsylvania senator, who dropped his presidential bid Wednesday, told co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski he is supporting Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign because the Florida senator is someone “who can work together with people.” But Santorum struggled to name one accomplishment Rubio has had in the Senate."

My friend, this is like hiring a plumber to do surgery on your colon. I mean, he knows how to clean out plumbing, so there's really no difference.

All the candidates have varying amounts of substance. My issue with Trump is that the substance he provides is scarier than the emptiness he avoids.

I get that compassionate conservatism vibe from Kasich. That's what makes him more electable than anyone else on the GOP side, but the GOP electorate has made it clear they do not want an electable candidate. They either want Cruz, who is the most disliked republican in federal office, or Trump who's been pissing off the social justice warriors and GOP hardliners.

Report: 46,000 Pa. Democrats Become Republicans Due To Trump « CBS Pittsburgh

Like or hate him, agree or disagree with him, Trump is doing what "centrist" RINOs have never been able to do: appeal to the real middle of the country.

So, appealing to life long republicans is bad thing, but appealing to democrats is now a good thing? In the primary? Where you're suppose to get your base on board?

I could appeal to the voters if I altered my views to fit what I think people wanted most. It's not hard to do what he's doing. It's less about him and more about how gullible people are.

Sure it is. The Devil just just make that offer to anyone. :):

Kidding aside, he's got charisma - and that means a lot in populist politics.

If it's so easy to do, why hasn't anyone since Reagan done it? (And make no mistake: the cohort of people supporting Trump is a carbon copy of the "Reagan Coalition".)

It was great when Reagan did it, and unfathomable now that Trump is doing it?

We're not talking about party bases here; we're talking about the 30-40% of the electorate that moves regularly between parties.

Cite that it is the same demographics?

    Arguably, Obama did it, too.

I can probably pull links if you really want to. I'm generally looking at exit polls, primary turnout numbers, party switching, etc. all backing up what seems pretty obvious anecdotally, looking at a typical Trump rally.

I don't think Obama won because of the same demographic cohorts, and he certainly didn't do it running as an America-first populist. I don't know, that might make for an interesting study/comparison.

I would be interested, but also dubious. We know Reagan won the general with a broad coalition. I do not recall that the primary brought out the same people.

I will absolutely concede that there is a similarity, in the sense of tapping into a broader disaffection in American society. But, the component parts seem different to me, partly because American society is so different than it was back then.

Plus, another big difference for me, is that Reagan actually had experience governing. ;)

It is precisely the blue-collar, depressed-economy, lost-industry type of person who flocked to Reagan that is largely flocking to Trump. Just look at his rallies in the Rust Belt.

The comparisons aren't precise, of course; but they're curiously close.

Absolutely true. Of course, neither did Andrew Jackson. (And there were Washington "insiders" even back then, who responded just as viscerally to president Jackson.)

I'm not usually one to give any weight to celebrity endorsements, but :chuck: just endorsed Ted Cruz. I think of :chuck: as being considerably more informed and intelligent than most in Hollywood. Plus, he's solidly pro-gun and it's not his first rodeo in the political arena.

Chuck Norris Reveals Who He?s Supporting for President in 2016

Bad information. Apparently Chuck hasn't endorsed anyone. Typical of the Cruz Missile: ready, shoot, aim
