Another thing to consider... perhaps it's a ploy to weed out the leak sources?

    Genius.

Clancy in.... one of his books. Patriot Games, maybe? Canary trap was what they called it. Send slightly different versions to different people and see which one makes it out into the wild.

It's been done in real life too:

World War II, United States Breaking of Japanese Naval Codes - Early code-breaking efforts, Jn25

From decrypted messages, U.S. naval commanders knew the general outlines of the plan, even the timetable. The messages, however, did not say where the Japanese intended to strike; the target was simply designated "AF." It was Rochefort who proposed a ruse to determine what AF stood for. Suspecting that it was Midway Island, he arranged for American forces on the island to send out a radio message saying that they were running short of fresh water. Rochefort and his group waited anxiously to see if Japan would take the bait. Finally, codebreakers intercepted a Japanese message: AF was running short of fresh water.

If the leaking sources are in the intelligence community, I'm going to guess that it will take something a little more sophisticated that a WW2 tactic to bring them down.

Millennials are old enough to be in entry- to mid-level positions.

    So, it would totally work.

I kinda think it's more than just one source leaking information. It's not hard to imagine that there may be hundreds of higher level permanent government employees who were loyal to Obama and now opposes Trump.

They've printed up manuals/etc. with errors. Each copy had a different error.
When intelligence detected a copy, they could track back to a group of people or office that it came from.

Glad to see this thread settle down a little into a more reader friendly format. It was getting gunked up with too much tl;dr material.
