I thought they were cross trained. It would not make sense that you couldn't do all jobs of a tank crew.

My grandpa served in WWI. He never talked about it. All I knew was he was a mechanic in the Army.

In case one gets injured or killed they all need to know how to operate the gun or drive.

Also they were advised to "have a smoke" every two hours.
They smoked and drank a lot even in official instructional movies.

Yes, he was in the Sherman.

Exactly. I had a cousin who was in Vietnam. He wouldnt offer anything but would answer questions however he wouldn't go into detail.

Randolph County, where I grew up, has a Sherman on the courthouse square....So as a kid I was fascinated by Sherman tanks.
