    I'm not sure which kind of crime let you arrest someone in the US.
    I know in France we have also a citizen's arrest law but I believe it can only be used if you witness a crime punishable by at least 3 years of prison.
    Like you can arrest someone if you witness a murder or rape but not a parking violation or shoplifting.

    It has to be a felony here. In my line of work (non-LEO security), we have to be very cognizant of these laws especially from a loss-prevention standpoint. Catching someone committing a theft (felony) and it's perfectly legal to restrain someone until police arrive. Restrain someone committing criminal conversion (misdemeanor), which is pretty similar to theft, and you're in a heap of ****.

    Yeah I assumed it can be tough to know what are your rights/powers when the crime is kinda in the grey area between a felony and a misdemeanor.Is there is such a thing as a greay area.
    Especially when you just have a few seconds to decide if you're going to arrest the person or not.
