The difference between Communism and Socialism is how it arrives.
Socialism is voted in, Communism comes at the point of a gun; often after Socialism is voted in.

    Pish posh.

Moderate Democrats exist the same way that moderate Republicans exist. But you're absolutely right, they'd identify more with Trump than Bernie. Having Bernie be the nominee would be Trump's wet dream.

Then...gasp... there's actually people that don't identify with either!

Four years ago, we were all anti-Hillary, and that worked out OK (well, sort of). We were all worried that traditional conservatives would stay home, but they didn't.

Bloomberg would get my wife's vote, along with the soccer mom's, the college educated, the... all the people that think that Bernie is a crackpot.

I believe you are correct, but not for long, moderate dems will become independent or republican by the next cycle and vote for Trump this one.

You are also correct that dems will get the self described elites indoctrinated by colleges and their core constituency, twitterverse...

I'd expect a lot of democrats will be "reluctant Bloomies" the same way that many of us are "reluctant Trumpers". Do what it takes to get control of the oval office, no matter how much you disagree with the person you put in there.

But how does this reluctance impact turnout? What candidates can motivate their base to show up and vote?

So you have the hard core right which even if they hold their nose can be motivated to show up and vote for Trump. And Trump can certainly excite and motivate a crowd because he is a showman and understands how to manipulate the media and tweak his opposition.

You have the hard core left who have a dilemma. They hate Trump but many will be butt hurt because their preferred candidate did not survive the dog and pony show. None of the candidates appear to be great motivators so will have a challenge getting kids to change out of their pajamas and leave the basement. If you really "believe" in Bernie and his ideals can you in good conscious vote for the Dem. candidate after they give Bernie the shaft again?

Of course you have the supposed "undecided" who will have a tough choice. Do they hate Trump more than they like their 401(k) accounts and jobs in a robust economy? They may tell survey callers they are undecided but when they close that curtain and vote in private what will be their decision motivator?

I expect a solid turnout from the right, just to avenge the impeachment debacle. I expect a mediocre turnout from the left because butt hurt feelings will tamp down enthusiasm. So before they even get to counting "undecided" votes the Dems will be behind. Then it just comes down to which candidate can properly strategize use of the Electoral College.

At 78, Bernie Sanders is too old to be president.

They need somebody young and fresh like Mike Bloomberg, who is 78.

Should have started the debates with all candidates getting a surprise health exam by independent physicians.

78 and fresh off a heart attack.

I dunno - Democrats, as a group, hate Trump. That's about the only thing you can state unequivocally.

As to, "don't believe that capitalism is worth supporting", well that's a hardcore progressive thing. Plenty of traditional democrat voters (think union, pro-choice types) aren't on board with socialism yet.

The democratic party is so fractured right now I don't think Lil'Mike can piece together a solid coalition of voters to beat Trump. A **** ton of Bernie bros would sit it out, or even vote for Trump. The Bernie/Antifa communists certainly would not vote for Bloomberg.

    Obama got elected.

[Sorry, it was tee'd up so perfectly, I couldn't resist.] ;)

Shame on you. I take back most of the nice things I've said about you in the past.

Why would they have to change out of their pajamas to vote? They wear them to the grocery store.

C'mon Brad. That is utter nonsense.

Most of the Boomer democrats would hit a person in the throat if they were called communists. These were the men and women who fought in Indo China or lost sons or were among 300,000 wounded there.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, this just isn't the same Democratic party of your day. I'm not sure it will ever be what it was to you. Moderate democrats are a dying breed. I wouldn't go so far as to agree with Brad that Democrat = communist. But it's more than just a little true. Today belongs to the X'ers and Millenials. This is just a revolutionary phaseout of past Generations' ethos.

Just for the record it seems the consensus is Bloomy is 5'4", I have read reports he is 5'3". In a recent Twitter spat a NYT reporter said she believed this was driving mini-Mike mad based on her 20 years of covering him, she also said he clearly lied on his drivers license when he put 5'10"...

My mother was a die hard democrat until the day she died. Today she would be seen a right-wing republican. My lord how time have changed.
