On a related note, there's NO WAY the Dems intend this result, but the faint glimmer of a Republican primary is effectively snuffed if they go to impeachment.

People who would otherwise be noncommittal will be compelled to rail against impeachment by rallying behind Trump.

The Dem national party just can't get out of its own way.

Exactly! I'm ready for the impeachment announcement.

2020, Keep America Great! A done deal then...

That will seal us out of any further worry of gun control, socialism, global warming, etc.

Probably GOP benefit in the House, Dems in the Senate

We need to get ahead of 2020 and start the campaign for the speaker of the house that we choose as opposed to some "moderate" from one of the coasts.

I can't remember if I said this here or not, but if the Dems go for impeachment, it almost insures a Trump 2020 victory.

This whole thing will hit maximum suckage quickly.

Not so fast. At least half, and maybe more, of the American voter, is low or no information voters, and/or acquire their 'news' through the MSM. In their minds, the Dems circuses are serious, important matters, or they wouldn't be doing it, IMHO. the fact that any impeachment hearings will last at least until the election will certainly work in the Dem nominee's favor, as the hearings will continue to hammer Trump, and/or make things up for the glorious headlines. We've all seen that it does not have to be true to make a glorious headline. I think you're giving too much credit to half the American voters that they'll see through this latest ruse. I do hope you're right, though.

Your second sentence is of course correct.

Welp democrats just handed Trump 2020 on a silver platter.

    This is hilarious.

Majority of the country doesn't like Trump as a person but are far from upset with his actions and legislative victories. This makes popularity polling very flawed. I can also promise you, the majority of them would not like to make Mike Pence president.

If you think dems even have a chance in 2020, I think you're being awfully pessimistic.

Every single day they make Trump more and more of a victim, and justify his behavior on social media. They're not just shooting themselves in the foot, they're amputating every arm and leg they have out of pure spite, and thinking the center in the country will support their insanity.

Hopefully it gives some momentum to re-taking control of the House in 2020 as well. The wailing and gnashing of teeth would be even more epic than 2016.

Until Nancy schedules a vote to formalize the proceedings, this is all show.

Trump already messed them up by saying he'll release the transcript, so now the media is moving goalposts. He's goading them into committing to something they'd probably lose. If they don't do it, extreme base is mad. If they do it, they lose.

Yeah I believe Pelosi jumped the gun here and Trump out flanked the Democrats by authorizing the release ahead of Pelosi’s announcement. And you’re right an “impeachment inquiry” is a meaningless pretextual phrase right now. It’s not the same as formal “impeachment proceedings”

To name few, Trump also promised to release his tax returns, meet with Mueller and testify, and place his businesses in a blind trust. I don't think too many people are putting stock in what he says, because he always seem to have an excuse. I think we're at the wait and see point, and honestly, if he releases the transcript AND the compliant, it's due (IMO) to him being spooked about being impeached. Impeachment may help Trump in the end, but I don't believe he wants to be impeached.

Wow this might end before it even began.

Trump campaign spox @kayleighmcenany tells @CBSNews this video had been ready for 6 weeks, “long before the Ukraine story surfaced. We just didn't think Democrats were stupid enough to go down this road that will surely backfire.”

In reference to Trump's tweet/video here:

Looks like the Trump team was ready for this

I don't see how that video changes the landscape. It was well known that plenty of democrats wanted impeachment proceedings well before the the Ukraine story broke. I think with these new revelations an impeachment inquiry should be started, if the DNI doesn't release the complaint by Thursday. I don't really care, nor do I think most anti-Trumpers, really care if he isn't removed. Congress should be on record indicating if they believe the president has broken the law.
Ultimately, it will be the moderates that will be the ones who determine if the democrats out kicked their coverage, but as of yet, the only people I see complaining about the possibility of impeachment are the president's supports. I don't see how a historically unpopular president become popular because the other party wants to impeach him.
