How many have been pulled over for seat belt violation?
How many think the government has no right to enforce such a law?
I think if I want to take the risk of driving without my seat belt that is up to me, I don't need big brother making sure I am tucked in at night? How about you guys?

What about the no cell phone while driving laws, that I am sure will be here before long?
This is a little different argument because it could endanger others.
BUT..... I am much more distracted with: other people in the car, my baby in the back seat, my wife in the passenger seat, a beautiful truck driving by, the radio on. Where will it stop?
Tickets for: passengers, talking while driving, thinking while driving, picking your nose while driving, listening to radio while driving, picking your butt while driving?
    Lets Hear it.

I should probably sit this one out. I smell like one of those heartless libertarian types who thinks the government has no business in my private life at all.

I hate the seat belt laws. While I freely choose to use a seat belt, I do not believe the government has the right to mandate its use.

I love the cell phone regulations. Shut the f-up and drive. For crying out loud who then hell does some 17 year old girl have to talk to, that is so critical, at 7:30am, that they sit in the left lane driving 5 miles below the speed limit while clogging up traffic that is trying to get somewhere. And while they are at it, ban reading the newspaper, applying eye-shadow or lipstick, and tell the kids in the back seat to shut the hell up too! Distractions are a leading cause of accidents, and talking on the cell phone while driving raises your risk of getting into an accident to rates that are similar to drunk drivers.

Want to talk on the phone, go home. I don't want to hear your half of the conversation in a restaurant, in a shopping mall, the butcher store or anywhere else. If you NEED to talk on the phone in the car, get a bluetooth hands free kit. If you NEED to talk on the phone somewhere else, then go home and do it.

I agree distractions do cause accidents. But...if you ban cell phone use you must also ban everything else you do in a car, where does it end. I get more distracted just from thinking than I do using my cell phone. Sometimes my mind is somewhere else and I end up home from work and can't remember how I got there. So do we ban thinking in the car next. Or what about talking to a passenger. I tend to look at someone when I talk...oops..ban talking. Or what about construction on the highway, that's distracting, better ban it. Turn off your radio distracting when you change that channel. No it may not be the safest practice but if you ban it you must also ban everything else that is distraction. That blonde in the car next to you....definately got to go!!

When I used to deliver newspapers, I never wore a seatbelt. I used to see cops regularly too, but none of them bothered me.

I would be interested to know if people are cited for seatbelt violations in addition to another offense which caused the stop. It just seems impossible to be able to tell if someone is wearing a seatbelt or not as they're driving down the road.

Annie . . . don't take it the wrong way, but I think I love you :wavey:

I don't know where it ends. And I really am a libertarian at heart so I hate to bring regulation upon myself or others, but there are simply a lot of total idiots out there who do all sorts of stupid things in cars while attempting to drive and they are the ones who are causing everything from fender benders to serious accidents. Talking on the cell phone is one of the worst things you can do in a car other than drink alcohol.

If you were on the road alone then I wouldn't have a problem with you killing yourself. But when I am on the road and you run into me (I've had my car rear ended 3 times, one of them serious) then I think it is reasonable for me to say that you should not do that!!!

I see where you are coming from, I really do. I just don't think you can legislate it. I have never hit anyone and I talk on my cell phone all the time. I have come closer to hitting people looking at the scenery around me than when talking on the phone. Just because there are stupid drivers doesn't mean you punish everyone.
You want to carry a handgun. There are a lot of idiots out there who carry handguns and do stupid stuff with them. So because there are idiots out there who do stupid stuff with handguns, noone can have them. Because we all know how many deaths are caused by handguns every year.
There are also millions of idiots who shouldn't be allowed to drive...millions. But do we make driving illegal because so many people can't do it properly, no. If one of those idiots hits you then they have to answer for it, we don't answer for them. You see what I'm trying to say. New York just passed another law saying you can't cross a crosswalk while talking on a phone or listening to head phones. Holy Crap what next.

Actually I only advocated using a bluetooth handsfree kit.

Stupid people do stupid things. In one part of London they have started to put padding on lamp posts because people keep walking into them! I just think we need to cull the herd!

I don't agree with the Seatbelt laws, helmet (soon to come) or smoking laws.

Seatbelt laws are ********...i actually drive sometimes without it on just because of the ******** law...but i almost always wear it except when i see a cop.

Cell Phone laws are also ********. If a person knows they cant drive using a cell phone, they need to make the choice and not use it when they drive. My gf knows she cant drive and talk on the phone so she stopped talking on the phone.

Cigarette laws are ******** too...if a business wants to allow smoking, it should be their choice. If people dont like it, dont go there.

Stop regulating everything i do...this is why i have problems with cops because they regulate ******** that doesnt do anything but cost me ****ing money.

My friend has 5 seatbelt tickets in Brownsburg. I doesnt want to wear a seatbelt driving in town...he does on the interstate, and he knows its dumb but that is his choice. Why should we be paying taxes for more cops on the street regulating these ******** laws?

I had a weird idea come to my head, while reading this thread. I wonder if a t-shirt, with a seatbelt on it (ala Tux t-shirts) would be visual enough to fool an officer. Seems like a fun thing to try. :stickpoke:

That said, I always wear my seatbelt, because I have taken a physics class and understand what happens at even a 15 mph collision.

It might. But I always wear my seat belt also, but because I choose to.

I wear my seatbelt and make everyone in my vehicle wear theirs because I believe it improves chances of surviving low speed collisions.

Given that, I agree the government has no business nor do they have the legitimate authority to force me or anyone else to wear a seatbelt. Too bad they're bigger than we are and can exert their will over us as they please.

Along the same lines, the town council in my home town tried to pass a ban on smoking in private businesses a couple of years ago. I do not smoke, I hate smoke, and I avoid smoke whenever possible. However, the government has no legitimate authority to dictate to business owners what they will allow in their own establishments. People who don't want to be around smoke have the option of not going where smoking is allowed.

When pressed, the primary reason they wanted the ordinance was because other towns had done it. Bloomington of all places was cited as the example most often. Bloomington!

I fought the proposed ordinance vigorously, primarily through letters to the local paper. Eventually the town council did pass it, but liberty was preserved when the mayor (now a US Army journalist by the way) vetoed it!

I'm sure the local nanny state proponents will try again soon, especially since we have a new mayor and the council has some different members. I will fight it again.

Government at all levels intrudes in our lives way too much. We need fewer laws by far, not any more.

Well, rhino's feelings mirror my ow. However, the only time I wear a seatbelt is when I am a passenger in someone elses vehicle and they ask me to. (Someone like a big purple one horned knucklehead.)

"Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

Given this statement, the Government (State, Local, and City) should not play nanny for any one.

If you feel that you should go splatter your face through the windshield - and you're an adult - go for it.

If you feel that you should smoke your lungs away - and you're an adult - go for it.

What I find funny is where these idiot politicians come up with "good laws and bad laws."

I mean - did these idiots actually use "morals" to come up with this crap?

    Example:

    Socialist idea & law #1.
Guns are bad. They murder people. Bullets cause crime.

    Socialist idea and law #2.
Hey its a woman. Vote pro-choice. Go murder a child today.

Now how the flying fling does that make any sense?

Seriously people. Its like the hokey pokey dance. Do this, but don't do that, and hop on this foot, but don't sing this tune....

    Lunacy I tell ya. Lunacy.
