    Could be anywhere
Without WWI and the Versailles Treaty to end all Peace we probably wouldn't have had WWII...

Even with that if Britain and France would have maintained their militaries, and paid any attention to Germany rearming it might have turned out much differently too. History being what it is though, let's just watch it all play out again while rhyming nicely.

On the bright side it sounds like we just send a strongly-worded letter.

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Russia's approach to the Syrian war--defending Mr. Assad while ostensibly targeting extremists--was tantamount to "pouring gasoline on the fire."

"I have been dealing with them for a long time. And this is not the kind of behavior that we should expect professionally from the Russian military," Mr. Carter said at a Pentagon news conference.

    Yes, yes, quite bothersome, what?

I would like to go on the record as having felt a deep sense of reassurance after watching the masterful statement from Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday. With such an intelligent and knowledgeable diplomat in charge of charting our relationship with the Russians, what could possibly go wrong...
    Pretty much everything.

The Russians will reduce any pro-Western groups before taking out ISIS.

    Think 1944 Warsaw Rising.

Once the dust settles, Assad will have no competitors and Obama will having at best a Syrian government in exile, like the London Poles.

The Russians have a number of target groups that they classify as "terrorists" You can bet Western backed anti-Assad rebels are high priority on that list.

I agree with the attacks on ISIS, but the fact that Putin is telling us to back down seems a little fishy. What else could he be up to? There has to be something more to this than just attacking ISIS.

Who is he kidding? Historically, that's EXACTLY the sort of behavior we can expect from the Russian military - at least the Cold War Russian military.

Good nose. The Russians need to preserve Assad as the leader of Syria in order to maintain their foothold in the Middle East. Assad was losing the country (short-term, at least) so the Russians have to bolster his rule.

We moved into Central Europe when the Russians were weak ; why wouldn't they do basically the same?

Russian Su-30M are giving air cover to Su-24/25/34 over Idlib. At least 2 R-77 AA missiles.

ISIS and rebels have no air force, and Assad is Russia's ally. Su-30s & AA batteries are to defend against... the US. Nice.

The Russians are there to prop up Assad, and to have a say in what comes next. I say let them own this quagmire until things calm down. It will be their next Afghanistan.
