ok, i didn't read all the replies, so forgive me if this has been said....

My initial take is that it's a stupid idea. If these kids are eating NOTHING how is it going to effect them? Distracting them in class? etc

My brother (7) convinced his teacher he wasn't being fed at home.....and she played into in completely. Instead of calling home the teacher took matters into her own hands and brought him food that she would give him when he played up the "i'm being starved at home" story. Then, he became SO convinced of it himself, he would come home and stuff food in his pockets and binge eat until he was sick.

The schools should not have the right to make decisions about how to raise kids.

On the other side of the fence, SOME parents need to step up and actually parent their kids....

Well, being the precursor to Christianity and the favorite target of another, Judaism would probably not be tolerated in the schools either.

IF they want true seperation of church and state, they can't specify WHICH "church" is ok and which is not. Kosher diet would be a loophole to let these kids bring food from home. As would being Islamic.

Well, if my children were in the Chicago school system, and they tried this on me, I would not only send my kiddos to school with lunches, I would make sure to let the administration know expressly that if then even touched one morsel of the food I sent, I would be having them arrested for theft. This kind of crap is nothing more than Communism run amok in the United Socialist States of Amerika....

I went to a track meet with my son this past week.
He was going to run the 400m and hadn't eaten anything for a while.
I usually go to the concession stand and buy him a Hersheys bar and that gives him the energy to run his race.
Well, the concession stand was closed.
So we found a candy machine in the school.
    WOW
You would not believe the health food TRASH they have in the candy machines.
Crunchy granola, some kind of baked cardboard chips, fruity snacks, some stuff I didn't even recognize...
That was the saddest candy machine I EVER saw.
And he did not get anything to snack on because it was awful.

You know society is in bad shape when athletes can't find good sustenance in candy machines. :):

While i can understand some of the reasons behind not allowing kids to bring their own lunches, government once again screws up the execution because they are afraid to confront the root of the problem.

The root of the problem are the parents, they either don't feed their kids or don't know how to feed their kids. It has been shown in study after study that children who are not fed properly are not able to learn properly, but instead of teaching parents on how to feed their children properly, the school systems take that option away from all parents and does it themselves.
Maybe it could be a good idea that while kids are at school the school system takes responsibility for feed the kids in their care, but the execution leaves something to be desired. In many schools they feed the kids whatever crap they can get from the lowest bidder and treat the cafeteria with such disdain that they can only get unskilled/uncaring people in those positions. In addition, you have individuals designing food menus around fiscal constraints and who have no training to even do such a task. So you have untrained people deciding menus which are prepared poorly prepared by unskilled people for a system that is, overall, underfunded.

The solution is simple, the school should offer at least two meals a day, breakfast & lunch. The menus should be consistent day to day and week to week, so the kids know what to expect on any given day. Also, the menus need to be prepared by someone who is skilled in providing nutritional advice, each school doesn't need an individual but there should be one for each school system. Third, the people who prepare the meals need to be just as well trained as teachers and should be paid the same. Lastly, each child should be required to either bring a meal from home for each breakfast & lunch, or buy a meal each time. This cost of the meals for each child can be supplemented by food assistance programs so it would be low-cost/free to some parents.
I'm tired of half-ass approaches by politicians, either a good meal is important to a child learning or it isn't.

No mandates, no subsidies. Lets work that into the model. :twocents:

    Breakfast?? WTF?

We got 30 minutes for lunch to shovel as much into your mouth as possible before we were kicked out.

I can't imagine having enough time during the day to serve breakfast as well, especially when they're already getting rid of recess and gym because there isn't enough time in the day.

Maybe I don't fully understand the legal concept, but it seems as if this lunch program could be argued to be just under the concept of in loco parentis. Am I wrong..I seriously don't much about the concept short of what I have read the past few days. I mean, I know what I think of the situation. The only problem is my opinion doesn't matter. Only a court's decision matters.

At my son's school, they open the doors at 0745. Students are expected to be there at 0800. The time in between is when they get breakfast.

Much ado about nothing, policy has been in place for 6 years!

At my kids school they can't bring homemade cookies, cupcakes etc. anymore, if they want to celebrate a Bday with a treat it must be store bought and in the original wrapper.
