There is a whole string of factories by me that are right on a rail line. The other side they are on a dredged river. One of the places makes huge ships for the military. All of their big stuff comes in by rail. Of course that is not stores or homes, but most of the stores are closed or will be closing now.

But a train may have brought it to where the truck could pick it up . . .
(Wonder how busy the intermodal ramp is at Avon?)

    BUT...

Atruck brought it to the train, and away, it doesn't magically appear on on that rail car or container car. A truck with a capable driver brought it there.

Rail is just a cheaper economical way of transit. That freight can move across the country without rail.

The Avon Intermodal ramp is small change, one of the smallest Chicago rail yard (NS Calumet smaller than Avon) handles way more freight.

I ran Intermodal from Indy to Chicago and back for 5 years until health issues (Hub Group). Hope to be back at it soon.

    Lumber yards do.

The chemical plant down the street does.

Ah, I hate to disappoint you, show me me a Lowe's, Menard's or Home Depot with a rail line leading into it.
The vast majority of manufactures use trucking, even facilities with rail access which is usually for inbound bulk materials need to produce their product, not outbound.

    Those are not lumber yards.
SCHILLING BROTHERS in St John does, as does State Lumber in Calumet City.

Highland lumber in both Highland and Schererville did before they went out of business.

Back in my college days I worked at a manufacturing plant that made refrigerators and freezers. We shipped materials in by truck, even huge rolls of sheet metal, and shipped product out by rail. It had two rail lines coming in so we could fill 8 or 10 boxcars a day with refrigerators and freezers. I think they shipped everything out by rail because all the product went long distance, down south, and shipped stuff in by truck because it came from many different places that didn't have rail lines.

Are we really arguing over which is more important - trucks or trains?

    :ugh:

Which is more important - the bullet or the powder?

I am not arguing which is more important. Just pointing out that materials, either raw or finished, are moved about by truck, train, and ship.
As far as what is more important regarding bullet or power, I would say that brass is most important. Otherwise you are back to single shot muskets, best a Kentucky rifle.

It is nice to see someone take a conservative stance and not want to just print money and bribe the people with it.

It is kind of upside down, isn't?

We criticize the dems for doing it, but now they don't want to do it, and we're criticizing them? :n00b:

So, were we opposed to the policy or to the people? :dunno:

We either give trillions to banks or trillions to you and your family.

Who do you think needs it more and will help the economy most?

I'm not an economist, so I'll yield to the experts.

If you want me to say on a micro level, I'll pick the banks / businesses. I'm still getting paid, my wife is getting paid, we're spending less money right now, but businesses (e.g. restaurants, travel and tourism) are suffering terribly bad.

Trickle down economics is still in favor with conservatives, no?

    Um...both.

No banks to lend, no businesses.

No business to employ people, no money in the economy.

An "us" versus "them" mentality is, just. not helpful.

I was not in favor of the bailouts when we had the "great recession" because businesses and banks caused that mess. Nonetheless, the loans, largely, have been repaid.

This isn't that. Not by a long shot. Comparing the two situations is...not helpful.

That being said, I don't need the cash. I think it should be more targeted.
