The difference is he was a real entertainer - not a political fanny pack.

His popularity and viewership were based on his being an entertainer rather than attracting a certain political demographic and catering to their prejudices.
Isn't modern, late-night TV "let's all get together and talk about how much we hate Trump?"
Aren't the awards shows the same thing?

I can hear that on ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, and PBS News shows; there is no need to stay up late or watch a bunch of millionaires complement each other on how "woke" they are.
