If you really wanted to run OSX you can get the same hardware and build a PC, get a copy of Snow Leopard or Lion, install that and Windows 7...dual boot, buy a really nice tower and monitor...still save money. However if you're not doing anything that requires certain specific Apple software, you're kind of just wasting money buying an Apple computer.

Macs are less likely to get a virus because the majority of the world uses Windows, hackers aren't going to target a small segment. That said, I've got a laptop that is 5 or 6 years old, upgraded to Windows 7 and it has been used for all kinds of downloading from torrents (never anything illegal). It has rarely had an active virus or malware scanner running and usually only gets scanned once every few months. It has NEVER had a virus and it isn't bogged down with malware. Most people get a virus because they get click happy and don't have a clue what they're clicking on...if you have self control and understand how most viruses are sent, you'll be perfectly fine running a Windows machine.

Once again, use for internet browsing/word processing/storing music and pictures...normal user types of things...Apple = overpriced. If you are doing something that NEEDS something specific, spend the money.

I bought a MacBook Pro 4 years ago. I am as happy with it today as I was when I first got it. I had never had a computer for more than 2 years before this one. I am glad I spent the extra money to get what I have. I carry this thing back and forth to work every day. It is a solid piece of equipment, and I highly recommend the platform.

If you will drive a mile or two out of your way for coffee from a Starbucks drive-thru rather than get coffee from Speedway Or McDonalds which is on your way, get a Mac.

I personally switched to mac just a few months ago and I don't regret it. I'm not a heavy computer user but the operating system is sweet and it is extremely reliable.

I purchased a gently used older model since the i3, i5, and i7 processors are overkill based on my usages. I agree with earlier posts suggesting a mac mini.

So spending twice as much to get something very similar with a fruity twist?

comparing speedway coffee to a proper espresso beverage is like comparing natty light to Sam Adams.

Starbucks serves anything proper? I've been dragged in there more times than I'd like and the times I bought something it all tasted burnt. Bad coffee is bad coffee whether you spend $.99 or $5.

Go Mac, you will not regret it I converted two years ago when my wife's HP laptop took a crap and a week later my desk top got a virus and made it pretty much unusable. You pay a lot more for them but it is nice not having to screw with them and do get the 27 in that is what I have.

You, um, do realize what OS X is... right?

Sorry when I was referring to linux I am meaning ubuntu.
I run ubuntu on my old laptop. I like free. Yea os x is unix based whatever. I get tired of people saying apple is the end all be all. To me mac linux/ubuntu and windows can all so the same things. Ubuntu being the cheapest all around. Plus I like changing operating systems for free whenever I want. But its all opinion. I don't agree with paying more for apple I don't see what justifies that.

A 500 windows laptop from bestbuy will handle all your needs original poster

A hi point will handle your self defense needs too. But for a few bucks more, you can get something that isn't hideously ugly, works better, and is easier to use. Same concept.

But avast antivirus is free? And I doubt with his usage he would need to upgrade in 2 years... this is like intel vs amd both have fan boys. In the end original poster should just go to best buy and mess with windows and mac to see which he likes more.

I'd rep you again for this if this socialist rep system would allow it.

I've done side by sides for fanboys on here. PC vs. Mac is coming down to hardware being almost exactly the same with Macs coming with a better display by default. For the cost difference, you can easily overcome that whether it is a laptop or desktop. I've done side by sides with Android based phones and iPhones as well...Apple doesn't always release full specs on certain products. They use phrases like "almost twice as fast".

As far as paying big bucks for anti-virus/malware/whatever, I have NEVER spent a cent on them for any of the PCs I've had. Plenty of the free programs work perfectly fine (and also put out OSX software).

These threads always come down to the WoooHoooo!!! I spent a bunch of money for a product from a trendy brand that I really didn't need and the people that bought a product that fit their needs without overspending. Group 1 tries to convince group 2 that they wasted their money and they should spend more to make up for it.
