Took my almost 3 year old daughter out to see some deer. We sat in the blind and watched 8 turkeys come out and feed and then head back into the woods. Then went into the edge of the woods about where I shot mine on Saturday and saw a few does passing thru. She likes it. So I may have a future hunter.

    That's awesome! What a cutie!

As for myself, I took part in a deer reduction on one of the Boy Scout camps - it has never been hunted in anyone's memory.

Lots of activity and movement opening morning. I bagged a medium sized doe within 20 minutes of legal time at about 65-75 yards, ran up the hill about 60 yards and died on the jeep trail... no blood trail strangely. Bullet entered right behind the shoulder, but she must have been bent toward me more that I though, cuz the exit just hit front of the stomach... a little messy. Saw about 8 total does that morning, but couldn't get another shot... I was being loud trailering the first doe back to the cabin.

In the afternoon I moved my stand to overlook two meadows. At the beginning of dusk a small doe appeared in the lower meadow... too small... I'll wait for her friends... after 30 minutes she walked up the wooded hill between us and within 10 yards of my stand she stopped and investigated me for a minute but I would not move or look at her and then she stepped out to the big upper sloping meadow... good... wait for her friends... soon enough another doe, same size... wait... they dissapear for a couple minutes, then one comes back... only 10 minutes of legal time left, and my primary purpose is to reduce the population here, sorry girl. ~120 yards, bang/flop. As I approached I jumped three does as I come down the hill side just out of sight, but still on the meadow. Dressed her by headlight, double lung right above the shoulder, exactly 3" above POI, and that's right where it should be at that range. An inch higher and it would have broken her spine.

After hiking all over creation and cleaning two deer, one at the processor and one in a tree over night, I decide I'm too tired and sore Sunday morning to hike back to the northern interior so I decided to still hunt down the drive from the cabin along the creek and in the bottom, and see where it took me. There had been sounds of bucks in the area the previous morning, and all I had left on my combo license was a buck tag. I moved away from the cabins and heard a wheeze, so I sat nearby and watched day break 100 yards from the cabin then started moving at sunrise. I saw no movement and heard no more sounds so I moved off in the other direction, being that moving toward the sound would put me closer to the ranger's house. I moved along the top of the ridge and then down to the bottom, watching. After 30 minutes I had gone about another 100 yards. I was now just down in the creek bottom and moving very slowly... I notice a medium size buck with a smallish maybe 6 pt rack shadowing me on the opposite creek bank. Head is fairly low, other things on his mind? Where was he when I was watching from the ridge???

I turned my body to hide my rifle as I slipped it off my shoulder, then used a tree between us as he walked to hide myself raising the rifle... a few more steps and I had an easy 40 yard shot. Bang/flop. Bullet went in at the shoulder and exited behind the opposite shoulder, double lung and heart, but destroyed some meat. Turned out to be an 8 point. This buck was shot about 100 yards from where the small doe was, at the bottom of the same big meadow, but I was on the opposite end of the meadow and across the creek. He was too big for me to lift, probably the size of the two others put together thank goodness for the ramp on my trailer, and dragged him up with a tarp.

Two days, $200 to the Boy Scouts, tags filled, rifle proven, inside backstraps for the wife and me for dinner.

I shot two on Saturday. Not huge but decent sized. Doe was around 30 yards, quartering away; shot entered back of ribcage and exited at te base of the neck on the offside. Missed the heart but destroyed both lungs. She still ran about 100 yards before dropping. It looked like someone had dumped a five gallon bucket of blood on her trail!

Shot the buck about fifteen minutes later, he was about 60 yards out and I hit him too far back. He only ran about 25 yards and dropped. I ended up putting another shot at the base of his head and he was done.

Forget the load offhand but I think it was 33.0 gr of 2230 under a hornady 200 gr spitzer. Shot out of a one of a kind Remington Model 8 carbine with a 16" barrel and Marble's peep sights.

Looking forward to taking my 7 year old son out for his first time on Wednesday evening. Not really looking to bag anything outside of a trophy, more into making the night a memorable one for the rest of our lives. Quality time together sharing my passion with him is more important than any creature that may stroll through.

I need to quit pretending to be a trophy deer hunter and just shoot the first one I see. Had I done this I would've already had meat in the freezer (running low as it is). I passed up a 2.5 yo 4 pointer Saturday evening and after he wandered off I started to regret it. Sunday morning didn't see anything then seen a small 6 or 8 chasing a doe Sunday evening but no shot could be made. Really started to regret not shooting the 4 after that. Hunted it hard today and did not see 1 deer. Now I'm really kicking myself for not shooting that 4. Taking a break for the next couple days and will head back out Friday.

Don't sweat it, you should get another shot at one given the activity you've seen. Might do well to let your spot rest a few days. Temps dropping Friday & Saturday should provoke good movement.

That is what doe licenses are used for at my house. Just shoot what makes YOU happy. :yesway:

Opening morning I had 2 does come running in and both ran right below my stand. Problem is I couldn't keep them in the scope they were moving so fast. It just didn't feel right to try and pop a shot off when there is too much risk of inflicting a bad shot. By the time they quit running they were in some thick stuff and couldn't locate them well enough to place a shot on either of them. It was a little frustrating but shook it off. They were both healthy does too.

Willow Slough in North Newton county reported 17 Bucks killed opening day. 300 hunters, 17 bucks I believe that is about 6% success rate. Or a 94% fail rate. I was lucky enough to get a 4pt on sunday, wasn't the biggest deer, but at least I am in the 6% group. Deer are smart and weary this time of year, if a shot presents itself to me I always take it, don't forget you can't eat the rack. Good luck out there.

and no.. i didnt kill this one. :( it is to my belief that someone tried to poach him. he was found at 6am still alive, had a gutshot through and through. the liver was hit me thinks, and with that kind of blood loss, theres no way he ran for 12 hours then collapsed. all theory though.

called the sheriff, got the possession tag, and was on my way. :ingo:

    good luck folks. :wavey:
