Is there a difference between wait times for suppressors or manufacturing a firearm or SBR? I'm a noob

The NFA answer will be no and they will tell you the longest amount of time if you ask....

To answer your question though, no. (GENERALLY) I am not an expert, but have been dealing with the NFA branch now and these processes personally which includes problem forms, efile, and trusts...and LOTS of phone calls and convos with NFA staff and FFL's, as well as others on this and other forums. So take with a grain of salt LOL.

Now, as far as how you submit it, that is a different story and different submissions have been consistently showing different wait times. It seems as of right now, that regardless of what the item is (SBR, Manufactured, etc.) that the Form 1 E-file system for a trust or individual is yielding an approximate 28 day (give or take a few days) turn around time...this is for your application to manufacture a firearm. This type of form is used generally by the community to take an existing AR15 or similar lower receiver and apply to convert it to an SBR; this way they can have a short barrel legally on this lower. You can do this form 1 on paper and send it in the mail, this method is reflecting an approximate turn around time of 7 months; this would be filing as individual, it seems to be a little faster with a trust as well, but I have not submitted a paper Form 1 with a trust, so I can not comment on that either way.

You can't E-file a form 4 (application to transfer a class III item) as of right now, so you are limited to applying with a Form 4 on paper through a trust or as an individual; individual your looking at about 7 or so months give or take, and a trust is approximately 17-20 weeks...(4-5 months on avg.) The trends seem to show that it is faster to do all of your forms through a trust at this time whether it be efile or paper form 1, or form 4.

Meat and potatoes: All NFA regulated items go through the same paperwork process as the other...being more specific, meaning that a suppressor goes through the same pending for approval process on same type of forms that an SBR would...Unless of course your building the suppressor or applying to manufacture a machine gun...which you can not do at this time! LOL I'm speaking toward the most common NFA items...

Hope that helps and doesn't confuse.

Well said Rossko it's nice to see a down to earth response to a question on a forum. I saw you posed "changed places" on an earlier post so I didn't post this and still am curious what it means.

No problem! I keep reading through my response to make sure it was clear as mud LOL there is so much when it comes to NFA stuff...but those have been my experiences. As far as "changed places" that was me removing a thread/post that I posted up in wrong section LOL Sorry for the confusion there! I just got my stamp for my SBR yesterday too!! See my timeline response for the SBR...that whole process is dated and tracked with detail!! Page 100 I believe?...or 101?; I have a suppressor up on the thread to track as well...

My first escapade into NFA stuff.

    Edit:

Also, a word to the wise - I used the Ask an Expert feature to see if I could link a paper form 4 with my electronic ID/login. Got an email back within a couple hours to call the DC office. Did that. Nice guy on the other end laughed and said, no - there is no way to do that. He was nice about it, though. Suggested I call 3-4 weeks after the check is cashed to check status.

    Edit2:
12-30 - called NFA, gave the serial number, nice lady said that it might take 3-4 months after pending, which I learned was 12/16/14.
