Does anyone know what kind of or how much firearms training the security force at Clarian have? (If any).

All Clarian Security Personnel are required to take a self-defense / level of force / restraint class given by trained and qualified personnel. Before any weapons are issued they have to be qualified in using that particular weapon. Clarian will not give an average Joe Blow a gun, uniform, and ID and tell him to have a nice day at work before first making sure he has been fully trained and knows how to react when the time calls. As for the downtown campus, if you pull your weapon out of the holster you better plan on pulling the trigger.

All of the major hospitals in the Indianapolis area are now staffed (for the most part) with Special Deputies through the Marion County Sheriffs Dept. This means that they have the same basic training as the regular deputies except for the traffic side of it. They must also keep up their qualifications to maintain their status.

These same hospitals all have no firearms policies and have for as long as I can remember. I have worked for one the past 26 years. If you come into the hospital with your gun, you can usually ask security to lock it up so that you do not have to leave it in your car. That is if you don't CC and make sure that you don't expose it in front of the wrong people. Yes, there are a lot of staff members that would make a big issue to this!

… For instance, an older guy came in the other day holding a Swiss Army Knife in his hand saying in a joking manner “where can I get some coffee around here”. Staff freaked out and called Security. Although, this was done in a joking manner I know he shouldn’t have brought the knife into play. GOD FORBID an INGO Member (Note: Someone who is trained in handling a firearm and has the required permit to carry) walks in here with a holstered weapon asking where he can get some coffee. Staff will probably :poop: their pants. I agree most people are anti gun when it comes to public places since we all know every single holstered / unloaded / disassembled gun will fire at a moments notice and will most likely kill someone... hahaha

I have said it before and I'll say it again....

While these "safe" gun free zones may keep weapons out (e.g. Huntington bank, state Capital building) you still have to walk from the secured area to your car. You might be safe inside but not outside.

Years ago, we had a hopital employee come into our ER via an ambulance. He was injured in a car wreck and his firearm was given to security to be locked up. The staff made it a big deal that he carried a gun and had two extra mags. This means that he must be a bad person. This is the kind of thought process that does exist.

Now that being said, I remember sitting in the security office one morning and a nurse was walking to the parking garage and security offered to escort her to her car. Her response was " NO Thank you, If my 38 can't protect me, what are you going to do?" It took me a few minutes to stop laughing.

I can't believe they even went as far as to say LEOs have to be on-duty. Wonder what the FOP would say about their signs as it means off-duty cops will have to leave their weapons in their vehicles.

Not sure about the Huntington Bank and State Capital Buildings, but as for hospitals you are more than welcome to carry your gun from your vehicle into the hospital, but you have to stop off at security to have it cleared and locked up before proceeding any further into the building. If someone doesn't wanna obide by that "rule" (not law) you'll be escorted off property and tresspassed. It's not our rule, we just enforce it. If it were up to me I'd say show me your permit when you enter and feel free to carry all you want. Hell, if it were up to me I'd have my gun on me every day I work.

I do agree with you in regards to "other safe zones" anything could happen while walking from your vehicle into a building and if one feels safer armed then they should be given the opportunity to carry into the building and then have their weapon secured once inside.
