Kirk's dissembling again. The Barbary war was against PIRATES and PIRACY. Not against jihad. The Barbary Pirates, as they were called by every nation in the area at the time were well known. The fact that they were muslims, (in a muslim dominated area) is not odd. Guess Black Beard was a jihadist, too.

Ah, so we didn't start this, we were minding our own business...

"In March 1786, two future presidents met with an ambassador from the pirate nations of North Africa. Thomas Jefferson, who was the US ambassador in France, and John Adams, the ambassador to Britain, met with the ambassador from Tripoli in London. They asked why American merchant ships were being attacked without provocation.

The ambassador explained that Muslim pirates considered Americans to be infidels and they believed they simply had the right to plunder American ships."

They plundered every nations ships, not just Americans. They were equal opportunity pirates. And, yes. We were minding our own business. It wasn't jihad. It was piracy.

No , they can thank / blame our guberment and their corporate masters for that .

If a guy from two neighborhoods over were coming over to your back yard and doing what they want , when and how they want , I imagine you'd get pretty pissed and wanna do something about it .

So it's Bush's fault? Until 9/11, we were only in backyard parties with an invitation.

Who is telling you this nonsense? The only dissembling here is being done by you.

It wasn't jihad. It was piracy

That's not what everyone says who was there.

It was clear to the Framers that the Barbary Wars were wars against jihadi:

From Adams and Jefferson meeting in London with the Barbary ambassador in 17
    86:

During their discussions, they questioned Ambassador Adja as to the source of the unprovoked animus directed at the nascent United States republic. Jefferson and Adams, in their subsequent report to the Continental Congress, recorded the Tripolitan Ambassador’s justification:

"… that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise."

I have no doubt that on INGO this will be turned into Jefferson and Adams lying. Let the stupidity begin.

The historical record (I mean the history not spouted by Alex Jones and Ron Paul) is crystal clear, Barbary pirates were motivated by jihad: Amazon.com: Victory in Tripoli: How America's War with the Barbary Pirates Established the U.S. Navy and Shaped a Nation (9780471444152): Joshua E. The United States of America was fighting the jihadis before ratification of the Constitution. Heck, Muslim raiders had been raiding the Med for centuries in the name of jihad. Is everyone aware that Rome was subject to jihad in 846?

What is recent is the absolute denial that Americans are in.

The Barbary Pirates wanted European slaves and took over a million, as usual Mr Jarrell is clueless and delusional. Thought you would enjoy hearing your own insult MJ.

Well I see the answer to my question was posted by Kirk ... along a similar set of lines - ....

The barbary coast pirates were 'state-sponsored' pirates - kind of like the Taliban/Al Queda relationship -
The war to stop this was against several small principalities under the ottoman empire.

they also nearly bankrupted the USA ...

The real question is...What will the worst president ever, Obama, and the worst congress ever, the 113th, do about this?

Bush is long gone, and has nothing to do with the current situation and has no ability to do anything about it.

What has happened to the Vice President? His profile has been lower than a groundhog these last few months. Have they finally duct taped his stupid mouth and stored him in the basement of the Capitol?

Iraq's civil war is not something that requires more American blood.

I am firmly against any additional military action in that region.

Just did a quick check on the MSNBC news website - lots of information on things that don't matter - not one story about Iraq. Guess the fighting's over and all is well (purple intended).

Laughed out loud when I read this. Ha. Yeah Bazooka-mouth Joe, Iraq is his baby, President Obama turned it over to him from the beginning...now - nothing. I believe I heard over the weekend we may be moving war ships closer in the area, possibly for air support, but in this kind of contact air support is difficult to impossible without ground forces to direct the attack. Joe's approval of cutting the Sunni's completely out of anything is working out great. What a waste.

    Yet.

Kinda like letting Afghanistan be a "rogue state" that allowed terrorists to train and plan, Iraq would be MUCH more dangerous because these petty religious tyrants would have oil money. Think of Iran without the restraint.

Along the lines of "strange bedfellows"... Syria attacking ISIS/ISIL on behalf of Baghdad.
    Syria's strikes against ISIL intensify

The more control of cities and land that these islamic crazies take over, the more resources they have to attack the u.s. and our interests. They expressly want israel wiped off the map, they want us dead as well. They take Iraq and they got oil and oil money! Not to mention this further isolates our allies in the region. This is a holy war they are waging on everyone else. It looks as though we are now leaving them alone as so many people think we aught to, and they are just getting stronger. seems like the wrong direction
