Maybe a sign on the door to that effect? I don't suppose that would stop anyone and would just alert them that you were armed. Oh well.

I've kind of thought about this too, or a sign that says "This door is locked for YOUR protection, not mine." Assuming these guys can read, of course. <sigh>

I always find it funny how people from the nicest neighborhoods think it "won't happen here". What, thieves can't travel? Hell, we pay for their gas to travel so they can rob you. Lived in Hamilton Co. most my life and thought it was a safe place (till i was robbed) Whatcha gonna do when they come for you? Until people show a force to stop crimes in the community, things won't change. I read where one thug was facing 40 felony counts in a recent crime. Why has he been able to get this far? Maybe it's because responsible people don't do the right thing?

My wife, who wasn't anti-gun, but tolerant of my hunting/very limited gun supply, is now open to the conversation of teaching her how to shoot my Shield. She is legitimately concerned about being alone with the kids as I head out to Wisconsin for deer hunting in a couple weeks. I might start her out with a .22lr first. Not sure she could handle anything more with the right amount of confidence.

Officers responded to the shop at 1305 South Rangeline Road around 9:07 p.m. Employees told authorities the suspect displayed a black handgun and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the safe before fleeing through the rear door of the business.

Officers were successful in collecting boxes and boxes of evidence. Fox59 has been told that a report will be forth coming after the officers have had sufficient time to digest the evidence.

    Stay tuned.

For any one interested. Kevin has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. He is expected to take 3 weeks to a month to recover. Kevin is a marine and was a first responder in Afghanistan. I expect to see him at work in a week. Thanks to all those that included him in your prayers!!

Good to hear! He has my prayers too. :)

It's just getting more and more crazy out there..or anywhere really. It's why I'm looking for a gun my finance is comfortable with now.

I'll talk to my bank when I need a car loan, but leave them out of gun selection completely. But, I do see your reasoning here. They are masters of theft and might be pretty knowledgeable on gun choice.

Up here in the northern part of the state we are seeing more robberies. I work in Valparaiso and the amount of robberies has increased a lot. Unfortunately where I work I cannot bring my handgun in.

I have mentioned it before, and will say it again. Burglars are different from home invaders. Burglars want to get in and out without detection. They go immediately (in most cases) to the master bedroom in the home where money, guns, and jewelry are primarily located. They will also take electronic items depending on circumstance.

Home invasions are a totally different story. These homes are targeted in the hope that someone is home, to be battered, criminally confined, and intimidated (or worse), either to surrender money or other valuables. Home invasion "crews" usually do "fly bys" of residences as burglars do, however, home invaders are looking for occupied homes in which to carry out their mayhem and malice.

Home invaders are not to be trifled with. They may have overwhelming manpower and rely on intimidation or the threat or the carrying out of certain acts to demonstrate their resolve. Home invaders deserve to be dealt with decisively.

You are correct...home invaders are a much bigger threat to humans that just burglers! Burgleries are about obtaining items...home invasions are about power!

Hypothetical situation, say six armed men kick in my front door am I legally obligated to announce that I have a gun? Common sense tells me given their overwhelming show of force I blast first and let god and EMS/LEO sort them out. They kicked in my door for crying out loud, they're not in my home to forcably sell me magazine subscriptions. There are six of them so if I have the advantage of good position I sure don't want to give that away with "stop, I have a gun!". Honestly if one armed intruder kicks in my door he's probably going to receive the same welcome from me.

In that scenario I certainly wouldn't announce I had a gun. With 6 attackers you would need every tactical advantage you can get. Odds are one or two of them would try to corral you into a room so the rest of the crew could move freely around the house. I would try to bide my time until they (hopefully) split up, then make a move when the numbers may be a little more in my favor.

Of course they might try to zip tie your hands immediately, forcing you to act.

My house is not laid out to lay low and wait. If they come in a full on frontal assault would be the only defense. Some may not agree with this but if they kick in a door or try and bum rush an open door it will be on....period.

The front door, or any door, is a choke point. They have to come in one by one. At that point you will communicate that you are armed, but not verbally. Get as many as you can while they are in the chokepoint because once they spread out your degree of difficulty rises quite a bit. Depending on the layout of your home, you may choose to retreat to an area more suitable for defense. I have a long hallway that goes between the main living area and the master and another bedroom. It is a natural funnel and, hopefully if necessary, will be an advantage.

I could be wrong but if they forcefully enter your home you're good to defend yourself however you see fit. They didn't kick in your door to sell you Girl Scout cookies.
