In Basic / Infantry school we had a young kid (youngest in the platoon) who was from right there in Columbus GA. Drill Sergeant found out about half way through and started saying the kid was actually from AL. We all got a chuckle. But it was seriously insulting to that young man. He turned bright red, and it took everything he had to control himself. He did smart off a little, and got smoked for it. I had no idea how serious that business was.

One of my customers is from Alabama...He's an engineer for the RR and does the run from Louisville to Jasper...I was ribbing him one day about being from Alabama..I can't remember what I said but it was something like "What's up Johnny Reb?" or something like that and he looked at me and said "Look brother...You know the route I run, and the folks along that route...I hate to be the one to break it to you but Indiana is the Mississippi of the Midwest...The only difference is y'all have more rednecks..."
