So the order goes basically like this:

The Greatest Generation: Born before 1945
    Baby Boomers: 1946 - 1964

    Generation X: 1965 - ~1982

"Xennials": ~1977-1989 - The generation that grew alongside microprocessor technology

    Generation Y (aka Millenials): ~1986 - 2000

Generation Z, iGen, or Centennials: 2000+

Fixed... There is much debate over the actual start of the Millennials

In US naval slang, ballistic missile submarines are called boomers

    .
I've heard that when one of these things leaves port it becomes like the 5th largest nuclear power in the world.

Depends on how you define "power".
Nukes aren't much good, if you can't use them.
    Destroy a city. Good.
Capture a city. Not so good.

But if its destroyed, it no longer needs to be captured.

Any particular reason they number starting on the starboard side, Act; since we read left to right I would have thought it would be the other way round

Squids dont count so good. They also dont always know their lefts from their rights. Just feel good knowing the count isnt "1, 2, 3, potato, blue..."

Navy has standardized many things across all ships.
One of which, is numbering systems.
Not sure about bulkheads. Ships number those. Subs, well there's not a good reason to need to number them, except maybe builder's drawings.
But pumps, motors, tanks, etc., ODD numbers are starboard. EVEN numbers are port.
Then, you number forward to aft.

So, the most forward tube, on the starboard side is #1.
You go on any ship or sub, that's the case.

    They standardized other things like..
All ahead one third. Means, all propellers, ahead throttle, one third.
Subs only have one propeller. But they still say "all ahead". Because, it's standard. You may be removed from sub service, and moved to a destroyer wih 2 propellers.

    Also, Departments and Divisions.
The sub crew is divided in Departments. Engineering, Weapons, Communications, Supply, Medical, etc.
    I was in Engineering Department.
Each Department is subdivided into Divisions.
Engineering Department consisted of RC Div (Reactor Controls Division), E Div (Electrical Division), M Div (Mechanical Division-nuke), and A Div (Mechanical Division-non nuke).
    I was in RC Div.
Officers are often referred to by the Department they lead. ChEng is the Chief Engineer. Weaps, head of Weapons Dept. etc.

Now, I mentioned Medical Department. And departments are lead by officers.
But, we had a Med Dept of ONE person.
    A corpsman, NOT an officer.
So, we can't have a Department headed by an enlisted.
So, the Corpsman can be referred to Doc, normally. Or, at a Department meeting, he is the MDR, Medical Department Representative. Cause he's representing the Department, of ONE.
    yup, it's silly.

As a lowly enlisted, I was called by my last name if I was OFF watch.
ON watch, I was referred to by the watchstation I was standing.
So, some of the watchstations I stood.. Reactor Operator, Shutdown Reactor Operator, Machinery 2 upper level, Electrical Operator, Auxiliary Electrician, Reactor Compartment Access, Primary Valve Operator.
Also, in addition to my watches, I was the Sound Silencing Tech for RC Div,
and Logroom Yeoman for Engineering Dept.

So, it could be complicated, but not really.
If the officer in charge, EOOW Engineering Officer Of Watch, needed to get hold of Machinery 2 upper level, he don't care who is there. He needs to talk to the watchstander. Who the watchstander is, is irrelevant.

Then only time my name might come out, is if I was the senior person in charge of fighting a fire, or in charge of the Damage Control team.
I would announce, I am Petty Officer Actaeon, and I am in charge of the scene. PHone talker, inform Maneuvering.
But then, after that, I would stop being petty officer actaeon, and now be "man in charge at the scene".

now that I made it clear as mud.
The navy does stuff like this, so no matter where I go, in the event of an emergency, I can fall back on my training. I won't have to relearn places and numbering systems over and over.

    Ahh Hah...

Just heard on the radio that while the Trump impeachment is being held up between the House and the Senate our president CANNOT nominate a candidate for SCOTUS.

Nancy could hold this up through the election, just in case there became a SCOTUS opening.

    What? Why not?

Because that justice might then be on the court during the impeachment?

I'm not aware of how that would prevent the nomination, although it might stall the confirmation process.
