Obama will certainly try to appoint a liberal to further his agenda, including gun control. There's plenty of time. It's all up to the Senate. **** just got real when it comes to big-picture politics.

Well Hillary always wanted to be on that court.
What a fine time for Obama to pick her and thus ensure she does not get "lost" in the scandal she has right now or the white house bid.

Honestly, given how close he is to leaving office, his appointment will almost certainly be liberal-"lite." I'd expect him to make an appointment from a 2 Republican senator state, that has a large blue collar populace. I would think states like Alaska, Idaho, Arizona make sense.

longest Supreme Court vacancy came in President Tyler's term. 1843-1845, the Senate rejected 9 nominations

Aside from being called douchebags and raked over the coals by the media, what's to keep the senate from doing that now?

This is the worst possible news, hopefully nothing can get done until after the elections. I'm not holding my breath though. One more anti-gun justice and the 2A is toast.

RIP Justice Scalia - He will truly be missed. Was just reading some of his writings today and thinking how fortunate it was that he was on the court. Turned on 6 'clock news to hear of the "breaking news". My heart sank.
