870 loaded with #4 and my .40 as back up loaded with frags or hollow points...I'm thinking that should stop the threat and not expose any family members or neighbors to a high threat of over penetration....Thoughts???

I have a Kimber 1911 with night sights that I keep in my nightstand. I don't have kids, so child-safety is not an issue. But, I also have a Mossberg 590A1 hanging over the bedroom door. I would grab the 1911 first, and then, if in need of more firepower, I would grab the shotgun.

I would have thought you'd mess up your walls and stuff from all the scatter of the shotgun.

Yes you will mess up the walls with the scatter of the gun. It might also be a problem trying to clean the mess up after your home invader leaves his blood all over the carpet
