She did not need nor never needed anyone to make her look like a democrat. She has talked like a democrat and shared their policy views since her first election.

when Haley was governor of South Carolina. She rebuked the use of the term “criminals” to describe immigrants, saying: “They want to come for a better life, too. … We don’t need to be disrespectful. We don’t need to talk about them as criminals.”

Yes,from 2015. She was certainly not for a secure border back then either.

It was her social justice language and aligning on most every policy of the left that made her look like a democrat. The fact she now says the opposite is telling given her current donors(which are pretty much democrats and either millionaires or billionaires).
