    Solid take from 4chan:

And that's what gives these elitist SOB's indigestion. The unwashed masses might not play along with their grand schemes. Hopefully those in power respectfully remember who really has the power, instead of pushing the people to exert their will in more direct ways.

Also, this has been my thought all along: if all hose people are against it, it must be a good thing. When I don't have all the information on a particular issue, I look at who is for it and get an idea if I should be against it or not.

I like gas around 2 bucks.

It's great for the consumer, but economists say too low of gas prices is a bad thing for the overall economy.

So, here's a question: are there some things that we shouldn't put to a referendum?

Here in Indiana, the law changed a few years ago that required a referendum for certain tax increases (but not "fee" increases). There've been mixed results.

For instance, if there was a proposal to require all book stores to give every patron a free beer on Tuesday, would that be something properly put to a referendum? Or, more near and dear to INGOtarian's hearts, what about legalization of marijuana?

California is kinda nuts with its referendums. I'm kinda satisfied with a representative government. If we were mob ruled we'd probably not have rights to some firearms even in Indiana. I think the kinds of things that should be up for referendum is tax increases, legislation that involves government benefits, including legislation that excludes elected officials from laws. If they don't want to abide by laws they pass for everyone else, they should have our permission.

    Correct.

I always viewed it as a half-assed attempt to keep Germany from occupying the continent again.:dunno:

Weird, I always viewed it as another one of Germany's attempts to take over the continent.

It was sold as a way to keep Europe (*cough* Germany *cough*) from going to war with itself again -- better than NATO! --, but the German international socialists saw a way to accomplish politically and economically what the German national socialists tried to do via war. The thing that most all of the government leaders ignored at the time was that Germany would be the primary economic power within the union and would call most of the shots. As long as they could keep their perks and privileges, they didn't care about selling their countries' sovereignty down the river.

NATO's advantage was that Germany was not the most powerful nation in the organization, and the one that was most powerful was not European. It gave everyone somebody to blame for all kinds of ankle-biting crap while knowing in their hearts it would keep the European countries from hurting each other.
