Would be quite the entertaining fight. They can't even handle a few small cartels, lets see how they handle the full naval might of the US parking off their coast for a few weeks.

I think we now have a path to making mexico pay for that wall! Part of their surrender agreement!

That right there would make the immigrant problem grind to a halt. Many hard working folks will come here, work for 5-10 years, sending everything surplus home to family they left behind. They would then return home to a paid off house and several years worth of cash to live off of. And that is AFTER the family back home used some of the cash to live.

Find a way to stop that flow of cash back home and there would be much less incentive for them to come here. Sure, they could squirrel it away and try to carry it back themselves, or snail mail it. But if they cant sneak across the border and within weeks have cash in hand of the family they left behind, they may not be as eager to come.

How would you stop the flow of cash? The border is wide open for anyone to walk into the US. Going from the US into Mexico is like driving into Wisconsin.
Just load up the El Camino with cash and drive in and there go. Unless that is unless you want to outlaw cash? Or gold. Or anything else of value that can easily be transported across a border, like an expensive watch, car, etc.

It all starts with making employing an undocumented/insufficiently documented worker a very expensive proposition indeed. Yu-u-ge fines even for the 'innocent' homeowner who picks up a day laborer from down at Home Depot. Presupposes a government that will follow through on this and other illegal-discouraging measures, including tax evasion and suspicious money transfers if they're legal. Just like legal immigration; if they follow all the laws, they're good to go
