And I think that if I were one of the affected guards I would refuse to work the Kroger detail if I had no means of defense. I am for security and can't even defend myself let alone a patron? No point in the exercise whatsoever. LATERS! If I ran the security company I would be tempted to end the contract. What's the point?
Most security guards live paycheck to paycheck. Refusing to work a site is grounds for termination or they'll move you to a site with less hours and pay. Site manager won't end a contract if it still brings in $. They don't care about your safety.

For a second job years ago I worked for a local security company run by a former Marine. I told them right up front that I would only work 'armed' sights. I had all the part time work I could handle. Race tracks, bars, factories, fast food places-all where armed posts.

What does it say about the state of things when a grocery store needs a security guard???
It says there are some neighborhoods that are rougher than others. Just the same as it's always been. When grocery stores in Carmel need security guards on a daily basis then that will say something.

You've obviously not been to the Krogers in Haughville (Michigan and Holmes), Mars Hill (Kentucky and Mann), 10th and Shadeland or out at Twin Aire on Shadeland? I wouldn't roll into any of those now without a weapon, and I've worked in two of those stores, and been through the others.

Don't forget Linwood & 10th St. I almost got robbed in that parking lot.

My local Kroger has some short old man at night. He couldn't stop anything. A couple local stores used to hire off duty officers at night but haven't done that in years.

10TV interviewed shoppers in the Columbus area who said they will change their shopping habits now that Kroger's guards will be unarmed. One such shopper, Lakashia Shavers, said that she would stop shopping at night
So she was willing to shop at night [driving to and from the store and walking to/from her car in the dark, without a security guard escorting her] because there was a security guard IN the store? She's now no longer going to do this because the guard isn't going to be armed? This makes no sense... I mean I'm sure this guard wasn't personally escorting her to and from her car during every night visit...

    A holler in Kentucky
Our local Kroger had security guards a few weeks back, first time I'd seen them there in several years. I have not seen a guard there the last few times I've been in, but I wouldn't really expect, or depend on them to do anything anyway if the SHTF, that's why I carry. Our Kroger has gone way downhill in the last few years, seems like they have set themselves up to attract lowlifes. That place is like being in a zombie movie, and we usually drive on by and hit the Meijer store a few miles away, totally different shopping environment at Meijer, clean store, very few to zero zombies, and they stock way more items than Kroger.

I was at an east Washington walgreens by Shelby street. Rough area if you ask me. It was about 11pm. The store was relatively busy and they had a female impd officer as the security guard sitting by the check out lane. She had her back to the door leaning against a display with her phone in her hand texting and her firearm within easy access of anyone who wanted to grab it

    So much for security ehh

I've not even really figured out what unarmed security guards are actually supposed to do.

In NWI, I see off duty (in uniform) LEO's working the doors at Walmart. But most of the time, they're not paying attention to much of anything, other than their cell phones. Same thing with the LEO's working the Venue.

Hey, I suppose it's a job and / or some extra $$$ for the guy or gal working it. But I wouldn't trust my personal safety, or that of those around me, to them. JMO.

Sadly, it's what we get when the pay is so ridiculously low (at least for non-LEO security). The security firms around 'da Region' typically pay at or just above minimum wage. What kind of security guard would anyone expect to get for that price point?

Can't really comment on how security is in other communities, but in NWI it's... well let's just say it's less than 'acceptable'.
