Devil's advocate, algorithms are not perfect. They can get quite ugly if left to themselves. Sometimes you need a human nudge to make them look right and eliminate stuff you REALLY dont want to trend. (suddenly they pick up on a word that is being used alot and you end up with a red herring in the list about that word even though its not really a trend)

Unfortunately instead of nudging and pruning it to prevent the weird results, they smashed clearcut it and artificially trended things up/down that they wanted to move.

Potentially a bigger scandal (because it affects more people) is the accusation that Facebook censors individual member pages, blogs, smaller media outlets, and discussion groups reflecting a conservative point of view. Sometimes, the sites are shut down, sometimes they are simply threatened into silence.
