They had those all along the coast. I'm sure the defensive line was only penetrated at certain points. Once flanked, they would have to abandon it.

Point taken.And keep it mind the Altantic Wall is not just in France, they had them on every coast from Spain to Denmark .Thousands of bunkers never saw combat.

You would think that they would have to be cleared at some point, though. I would think three or four guys and a bag o' frags would have had to go down the line and make sure they were all clear.

I wonder if, once flanked, the German soldiers surrendered (discretion the better part of valor and all), so clearing it might've been relatively easy with a .45 or .30 carbine.
