I don't remember that Chinese incident, either.

    Thee other ones I do.

And CM will probably be along to tell us where he was when the Maine blew up.

Ok not completely aeronautically ignorant but will go ahead and show some here - I am surprised to see these bombers are prop planes not jets, I would have assumed everything would be jet engine by now.

We don't have any prop bombers but the Ruskies really like this one. It performs well at it's current missions, if that mission ever becomes bomb the US it will be well down the employment plan or it will be toast. Also, it's hard to build a world dominating AF with an economy about the size of CA.

I think it's a challenge now to see who will keep their oldest bomber flying with upgrades. The BUFF is planed to remain in the inventory until 2060 now...over 100 years of operational employment. Next up for the old girl will be new engines.

Well, we should be brushing up on what we'll be up against.

Relax President Obama told us the Russians were no longer a threat you guys have short memories!

    VP Biden was in agreement

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/bi...y-for-his-2012-warning-about-russia-resurface

VP Biden is not viewing China as a threat as well.

    https://www.axios.com/biden-china-threat-us-5f0e3fa4-4869-4038-aa0d-d3164e63f3fc.html

So if VP Biden gets elected all our problems will be gone once he restores “dignity” to the U.S. on the world stage.

    Whew, that's a relief.

Then we can look back to another time when they were our allies - 1941.

Plenty of Mosin Nagants in this one.

The Aleutians are home to some sophisticated early warning radar systems.

Public source information on one of them.

Those islands do not appear have much in the nature of active air defense, although that information is likely to be classified obviously. But, these investigative flights can help the Russians model how much time would elapse before any sort of air superiority activity could reach the area.

And, as I recall, those Bears wouldn't be used much as an actual bomber, but they've been fitted with the capacity to launch long range missiles. In that role, they provide great flexibility.

For a long time it's been the objective to get to the launch boxes and take out the bombers before they can spawn their missiles. There are few of their AF assets that would be effective in a first strike with short range or gravity bombs. Now, if they get to a second or third strike...

A few years after the Maine, CM, while nearly legendary in status, would have been even more famous if Wilbur and Orville had taken him up on the idea of mounting guns to their airplane.

Sometimes I get to wondering if QE + ZIRP + MMT = SSS (Selective Service System).

Selective Service? Talk about of waste of time and money. Every military retiree will be back on active duty before there is another draft.

    :nailbite:

And yeah, it's not like the military needs to spend it's resources weeding out every crack head, over weight, out of shape, illiterate, psycho in America to find the few who can actually be useful.

Props are very efficient at lower speeds. For a heavy lift aircraft like that, a prop works really well at being able to accelerate it to takeoff speeds under a full load, and allows it a tremendous range.

By contrast, our B-52s are fuel hogs, and the use of a turbo-jet engine on that craft was just idiotic. It was the flavor of the day back in the 40s though.

Large turbo-fan engines are the best compromise, as they can deliver quite a bit of low speed thrust while still keeping some efficiency at higher speeds.

The next evolution in heavy lift engines are large bypass ratio geared fans.
