Wonder how fast the freighter was selected and placed...

But isn't that a nice clean no nonsense bridge design?

When you have the guns, you can make a company forfeit a ship real fast.
Course, it might have been ready for the breakers.
    Or leased by the government.
    Who knows.
Placing it could be done in a few hours. Depends on how many tugs, wind and sea conditions.

Just some more entertaining contrarian commentary.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR798Wd7Qck

Contrarian, sure, but also has some fundamental misunderstandings of the situation prior to and since the Maidan coup (that he can't even spell correctly).

I have no problem allowing that there are unseen machinations driving certain events. The problem with that guy is that he doesn't appear to have any more understanding or credibility than some random dude on a local gun forum.

I've forgotten much of my Russian vocabulary (and prepositional cases), but I wonder if "over the bridge" and "into the bridge" sound similar....

    Now THAT'S a warning shot.

So, Trump has now tweeted that he's canceling the meeting with Putin because the sailors and boats haven't been returned to Ukraine yet.

I think that's an interesting basis. He's not saying Russia was wrong for taking them, but only not returning them.

This is better than Obama's "red line" comment, but it looks like this is going to be accepted as the new normal for the Sea of Azov. We appear to be conceding it to Russia, like we conceded the Crimean to them.

Of course, we are not alone in that. And we can still officially refuse to recognize their claims, but still... we're not doing anything about it. (Not that I'm advocating that we should, I'm just pointing out the obvious.)

We need to hurry up and kick Russias ass

It appears that we are in no hurry to do so.

We can do Freedom Of Navigation patrols within 12 miles of Chinese positions in the South China Sea, but we can't be bothered to sail near Russian-claimed waters.

The ship seems a bit ... experienced ... for confident station keeping, and anchoring it there would seem almost as dangerous for the bridge as the Ukes. Think Sunshine Skyway

That was a ship in motion, without tugs, during a "severe" storm.
Quite a bit different than a ship in the calm being moved by multiple tugs.

Anchoring it there's pretty easy. Drop anchor. Make sure a LOT of chain is on the floor.
A lot of people think the anchor itself hold station, but it's the weight of the extra chain on the seabed.
Also, lines can be run to the pylons.

In the event of an upcoming severe storm, bring the tugs back, pull the anchor, move the ship.

Brief non-update: Ukraine has barred the entry of Russian men aged 16-60. Ostensibly to prevent (or mitigate) the LGM issue in their eastern provinces and Crimea.

    Otherwise, they're on their own.
