The plane, downed by Syria's Russian-made S-200 air defence system, had a crew of 15 who were all killed, Moscow said.
    From AFP news article.

Indeed - thanks. I see that now.

Although updated, that system goes back at least to the 70s.

This link has a video that also claims there were launches from the French frigate in the area.

Russia's Defense Ministry says a military aircraft was brought down by Syrian anti-aircraft batteries after it was used as a shield by Israeli F-16 jets; Israel says it holds the Assad regime "fully responsible for this incident."

So... this is a little convoluted, but it shows we can still play big-boy ball.

The US imposed sanctions against Russia for the invasion of the Ukraine. (That's why I'm putting this here.) China and Russia have had a technology sharing arrangement that sometimes includes trade deals for military equipment. China recently purchased some military equipment from Russia. We're now saying that was a violation of the sanctions against Russia, so we're sanctioning China. :)

China's pissed. Russia's kinda pissed, but they got their money, so they kinda don't care. Everyone kinda understands that this is really another part of the tariff issue, but this will be defensible if the matter ever goes to the WTO.

This is closer to a comprehensive foreign policy than we've had in 10 years.

Apparently Russia wants Syria to have better technology to shoot down Russian planes.

Russia is to send new anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, a week after Syrian forces accidentally shot down a Russian aircraft during an Israeli air strike.
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the S-300 surface-to-air missile defence system would be delivered within two weeks.

Ok ok ok, they're hoping that the new systems won't be so vulnerable to jamming and other techniques, so as to NOT shoot down other Russian planes.

    I think....

Explosion at a college in Russian-annexed Crimea, ~20 killed (so far). Conflicting reports of gas explosion or terrorist act (which, actually, are not mutually exclusive).

It'll be natural to suspect Ukrainian operatives, but this is a bit reminiscent of islamofascist attacks on Russia in the past.

    ETA:
Updates are that it was a disgruntled student. Who killed about 20 people, then himself.

There's a 2003 treaty that says that water is shared territory. Looks like Russia is now claiming it as entirely her own.

Total aside: that's some fancy boat driving by the tanker captain!

Footage that (credibly) claims to come from the Russian vessel as it rams the Ukrainian tug.

Uh, the actual language is NSFW for Russian-speaking establishments. The Beeb uses *** for the bad words, and bleeps them in the audio, but I'm pretty sure they missed a couple.

This map kinda shows how unbelievable the Russian claims are.

The Ukrainian ships left Odessa, a Ukrainian port on the Black Sea, navigating to other Ukrainian ports in the Sea of Azov. The Black Sea is basically international waters, in the sense that it is free to shipping. Boats of any nationality can transit, as long as they aren't doing anything illegal - like attacking or smuggling or something like that. For those purposes, Ukrainian navy taking Ukrainian supplies from one Ukrainian port to another is not "smuggling."

The Russians shut down these Ukrainian vessels BEFORE they entered the Sea of Azov, while they were still in the Black Sea. That doesn't make sense. And, it completely repudiates that 2003 treaty that said the Sea of Azov would be shared - Russia has ports there, too.

Ukraine's martial law declared along the border(s) with Russia, and also Moldova. That last bit is interesting, because there seems to have been some disruptions there that haven't really been reported in the West.

Poroshenko has promised that elections will proceed despite martial law, which is probably good for the overall stability of the government.

A Euro arbitration panel awarded Ukraine ~$1B in damages from Russia for the annexation of Crimea. This does give the Ukraine cover to start taking over Russian property, where they can find it.

Some of the Ukrainian sailors have been paraded in front of cameras, saying the usual things that sailors/soldiers do in this situation: whatever they're told to say. It seems like they're being forced to say that they were sailing into Russian territorial waters, when it is pretty clear they weren't.

If that's the story Russia is going to use, then she's annexed the entirety of the Sea of Azov.

I've forgotten much of my Russian vocabulary (and prepositional cases), but I wonder if "over the bridge" and "into the bridge" sound similar....
