Absolutely. Post-pone the mega deal a couple years if he balls out. If not, move on.

Basically this is the franchise tag a year early. Rather than tag him next year if he has a good year, they "tagged" him this year. Like others said, this pushed the salary onto this year's cap and saves them later. Gives JB some security as well.
