Yes, you absolutely can. It's no different than any other rules they make concerning playing. For example, on game day, we had to wear a tie to school. No tie=no play. Last I checked, playing football in high school is a privilege and the coach can make rules concerning who plays and who doesn't.

It was stricter than this when I went. Players code of conduct was adhered to regardless.

    This crap sucks.

So he now has a RIGHT to play? Coaches can bench anyone at anytime for near any reason?

If the coach says "hey, you suck," "you're not making grades," or "you have disciplinary problems" then yeah, he can. If he's honest in his reasoning, and says "you can't play because the school doesn't agree with your non-violent political statement," then you're asking to be sued.

Man they used to. Seriously. Not this situation but if coach said this is the way we do it or bench then you best listen.
Things like this changed the year after I graduated. I can not say for the better. I can not say for the worst either.

Oh, I know. They would've done the same thing at my home HS (heck they probably still are).

Can this school also ban Jehovah Witnesses from play sports because they don't stand for the pledge?

Well obviously, there is at least one federal court that disagrees with you and agrees with me. BTW, both political and religious speech are covered by the first amendment.

Again, I agree with the federal court. The player can't be forced to stand. No argument from me.

However, the coach has every right to inform his team that anyone not being part of the team will not play.
