A Rock Island .45 or 9mm would be a great choice. I feel the Rock's are a well kept secret. I own 7 of them and they all have been very good for me. I just picked up an officer model 45 for $420 and it is a great firearm so far. Just a thought, check one out and see what ya think. Happy hunting..

the shield is a nice option for $400 I helped my sister pick out her edc when she got her LTC! I have shot it a lot and even carried it for a while! Smith SD triggers are horrible! Some 3" 1911's pretty close to that price point also, lots of .38 airweights out there for under 4bills!!

Yes, some nice Ruge semi's in that range. Bought my SR45 for $400 few months back. Full size, but not heavy.

Careful shopping might find a used 1911 (RIA?) for $400.

Looking for smaller that can also CC, Top Guns in TH had M&P Shields 9mm or 40 for $399 (at least they did when I got mine a couple months ago). Good shooter for a shorter barrel.

    You own 7 RIA's :yesway:
I own a 1911 GI 9mm and absolutely love it. I'm a big fan of 9mm handguns. Love the round. so I decided to purchase a 9mm 1911. It was a bit finicky before the break in (first 200rds or so)... but now after rds 201-1000+ I've had no malfunctions, regardless of whether its wolf, tula, any brass, or defensive rd. What a great gun.

If your wanting to save money, some type of budget , my choice would be the Keltec P-11. 9mm 11 shot. One of the smallest 9's out there today. I have had mine for 6 years and I have had zero problems. I carry it in an ankle rig and I also have it in a OWB holster. $246 and they come with a life time warranty. I am very happy with mine.

Used and a few bucks over your budget bought from an INGO member... posted in the WTB section. Has served me very well for my intended purpose. Titanium frame and cylinder Tracker 44mag loaded up with 320gr solids... ammo almost weights more then the revolver. My concern is large cat and bear when we backpack.

On a budget you can't beat the old sigmas. SW9ve or SW40ve. The trigger takes some getting used to but they are good guns for between $200-$300. My father has over 10k rounds through his and I have over 2k through mine. Mine doesn't like steel cased ammo. But I got it for $300 with 5 mags 200 rounds and a righty holster I can't use so it was more of a why not at that price. I have a hard time passing up gun bargains.

I'd agree with the .357 and .44 mag sentiments. When size isn't an issue, my go to is an S&W Mod 66 .357. It is amazingly accurate and just a beautiful gun. You might be pressed to find one for $400, but I think you might be able to some S&Ws or Ruger used in that range or possibly new Tauruses.

Just bought another Glock from gunbroker. $385 delivered for a G23 that looks like it has spent most of its life in the box.

I just bought a S&W Bodyguard 380 for 400 out the door. Very nice little gun and I also bought a Techna Clip for it which is similar to the clip for Kel-Tec 32 & 3AT so you can carry it without a holster. I have also seen the Shield 9 in the $370-$390 range at a couple of LGS. I have heard nothing but good things about the Shield.

I have a Ruger SR40 that I really enjoyed. It is very 'modern' and it is easily the most comfortable gun I've ever held. The "pointability" is just great and the grip has a reversible backstrap that can be adjusted. Like I said, very, very comfortable. Some people have had difficulties with the trigger one that, but I absolutely loved the trigger. Great break and very, very fast.
