I've heard conflicting information, so I'm trying to get the right picture...Does porting a barrel affect range or accuracy in any way? Specifically on long guns and shotguns.

There are a dozen aftermarket companies that
perform this modification. Does it actually work? Probably a little, but
equally probably, not enough to matter. It definitely does not work as
well as it does in the high gas pressure environments of rifle and
pistol. Stroboscopic photography seems to show that porting does indeed
slightly reduce muzzle jump when the gun is unrestrained. The heavier
the shell, the better it works. Whether the reduction in muzzle jump
will be noticeable to the shooter is another question, especially if the
    shooter uses light loads.

I have an extra long barrel in my Glock 17. It has two ports and shoots great.

It helps with barrel jump and that makes it better for repeat shots on target.

For what is worth. My wife has an XD40 and a friend of ours has an XD40 thats ported. Ive shot both side by side and the only difference I really noticed was that after a couple of rounds I could still see the dot on my wifes front sight. That bothered me because most shootings are at times of limited visibility and the loss of the front site is an issue for me. Thats one sample of one gun so take it with an appropriate amount of weight.

Thanks all. Porting consideration is for a shotgun, Rem. 870 to be specific, and Ive never had any personal experience save for a higher end Beretta Sporting Clays gun. That was near recoilless, but im sure that wasnt just the porting.

Same reason I don't use the ported barrel that I have for my G26.
After a few rounds you can't see the front sight.
