Unless you are employed where your job description calls for carry and possible use of a firearm, I'd say that failures today with modern firearms are largely due to:

    1) operator confusion/panic/lack of training/infrequent practice
    2) ammunition
    3) firearm

I have been researching about 5 or 6 handguns for the last 6 months
and it seems that nobody makes a gun that you can just buy and
    depend on.

No matter who makes it: Colt, S&W, Ruger, Taurus, Glock, Rossi
Kel-Tec, Kahr and so on, all have at least some complaints.

Along side these complaints are many who have had no problems at
    all.

    It gets very confusing.

    Jimmy

ALL guns will have models that fail. What you NEED to look at is their customer service, and their backing of their product. S&W and Ruger, are 2nd to none in this department.

Taurus I would avoid at all costs.

The secret to your query is that many of the people who post reviews are looking for perfection. Perfection is not a reasonable standard for anything. Some very expensive machining parts are to the 1/1000th of an inch but a bearing costs $thousands.
Weapons and weapons systems are mass produced and there are occassional problems. Most manufacturers are more than willing to remedy any problems you might have.

When you look at the complaints try to think of the percentage that have complaints v. the number of guns that manufacturer makes of that model and it will come into perspective better.

ive own alot of different firearms of all makes and models have had no issues out of any of them, but if the firearm is not taking care of guess what it will malfunction because of negligence

    Here is my list

I have been shopping for a 9mm for CC. I narrowed down the list to the most likely candidates that I would like to try. Here they are:

    New 9mm carry weapon

    Smith & Wesson M&P Shield
    MSRP $449
    images

    • Caliber: 9mm

    • Capacity: 7 Round & 8 Round

    • Action: Striker Fire

    • Barrel Length: 3.1" / 7.874 cm

    • Front Sight: White Dot

    • Rear Sight: White 2-Dot

    • Overall Length: 6.1" / 15.5 cm

    • Frame Width: .95" / 2.413 cm

    • Overall Height: 4.6" / 11.684 cm

    • Weight: 19.0 oz / 538.7 g

    • Frame Material: Polymer

    • Barrel/Slide Finish: Black Melonite® 68 HRc

    • Trigger Pull: 6.5 lbs. +/-

    • Sight Radius: 5.3" / 13.3 cm

Single stack with trigger safety. Also has thumb safety which can be ignored for the most part. I would rather not have the thumb safety but I found shooting the M&P 40 C to be no problem. The safety does not get in the way and is below flush with the slide.
I have not fired the shield and they are pretty rare as a gun rental. The slim profile is very attractive as a concealed carry piece. Performance is reported to be good and reliable by many.

    Smith & Wesson M&P 9C
    MSRP $719
    109004_01_md.jpg

    Caliber: 9mm

    • Capacity: 12+1 Rounds

    • Barrel Length: 3.5"

    • Front Sight: Steel Ramp Dovetail Mount (Tritium Sights Optional)

    • Rear Sight: Steel Novak® Lo-Mount Carry (Tritium Sights Optional)

    • Trigger Pull: 6.5 lbs.

    • Trigger Travel: Rest to Fire .300 in.

    • Trigger Reset: Approx. .140 in.

    • Frame: Compact

    • Finish: Slide and Barrel Black Melonite®, 68 HRc

    • Overall Length: 6.7"

    • Material: Zytel Polymer Frame, Stainless Steel Barrel/Slide and Structural Components

    • Weight Empty (No Mag): 21.7 oz.

    • Overall Height: 4.3"

    • Width: 1.2"

    • Sight Length: 5.75"

This is the big brother to the shield. A little thicker, taller, longer – but not much. Nice gun, much more capacity (13) thanks to double stack mag. That makes concealment a little more work. I have handled the M&P in a 40C version. It is very nice to hold and shoot. No problems with this gun expected.

    Glock 26
    Online $499
    images

    • Capacity: 10+1 Rounds

    • Barrel Length: 3.46"

    • Trigger Pull: 5.5 lbs.

    • Trigger Travel: Rest to Fire .500 in.

    • Overall Length: 6.29"

    • Weight Empty (No Mag): 19.75 oz.

    • Overall Height: 4.17"

    • Width: 1.18"

    • Sight Length: 5.67"

Good capacity in a small package. Trigger safety and nothing on it that shouldn't be there. This is a small package with a wide (double stack) frame. I would have to fire one of these before purchase. It is a Glock and I would trust my life with it. Concealed carry is not as easy as a single stack.
    Ruger LC 9
    MSRP $443
    3200.jpg

    Caliber: 9mm Luger
    Capacity: 7+1
    Barrel Length: 3.12"
    Barrel Material: Alloy Steel
    Barrel Finish Blued
Slide Material Through-Hardened Alloy Steel Slide Finish Blued
Grip Frame Black, High Performance, Glass-Filled Nylon

This is a very small pocket gun or a gun for someone with very small hands. I don't think I would want this as a carry piece. I have already owned a subcompact pistol and they are great for CC but have limitations.

    Walther PPS 9mm
    MSRP $599
    images

    Model: PPS
    Caliber: 9mm
    Length: 6.3"
    Height: 4.4"
Overall Width/Width without slidestop lever and takedown buttons: 1.04"/.91"
    Barrel Length: 3.2"
    Sight Radius: 5.4"
    Weight (without Mag): 19.4 oz.
    Standard Magazine Weight: 1.9 oz.
    Action: Striker Fire Action, Pre-Cocked
    Trigger Pull: 6.1 lbs.
    Frame: Black Polymer

By all accounts, this is a great pistol. The lever slide release on the trigger guard is ambidextrous. No goofy safety levers to snag on clothing. I would have to fire one of these to check out the trigger.

I have tried the XD 40 and it was a nice fit in the hand. This one would have to have the extension mag. It is a double stack mag so the grip is wide.

I included the LC9 in the list but I don't think it measures up with the rest of them. I was looking for a compact 9mm that is well made and generally reliable. My Dad is also interested in the same and I shared this list with him recently. Prices were from Oct, 2012. They may have changed.

HK usp compact. Pick your flavor and worry no more. You should not have any issues until 20k rounds at least.

If humans are involved in any way in the design, manufacturing, or distribution, there will be the possibilities, no, probabilities that there will be flaws.

This is true with EVERYTHING involving humans, not just firearms.
