He made a joke, it fell flat, he apologized and used it as a chance to promote Veteran's Day with dignity. Pretty much the opposite of being a douche.

As to Actaeon's post, I'm not seeing any outrage about the apology (to the contrary, actually), and I'm not giving a click to some armchair YouTuber trying to capitalize on this.
Do you even twitter? The armchair youtuber pretty much said what you said, except the part about “armchair youtuber”.

Americans aren't the only ones that have stupid questions asked by politicians.

Here is a short video, and a 12 minute video.
A Senator (Australia) is trying to ask questions about the navy's picking out a new class of submarine.
It appears that she has NO knowledge of submarine power plants and propulsion.
The admiral spends time trying to explain something to someone that doesn't have the basic knowledge to even understand the language.
She doesn't understand submarines in general.

This defines today's tribalism. Say something retarded... don't listen to the people explaining to you why you're being retarded.

Nope, just blame it on the russians or some ****.

And how many has Nina heard of?
Maybe someone should tell her how small her sample size is.

His ex accused him of an attack that could have meant life in prison. A selfie saved him.

Guy's ex-girlfriend accused him of breaking into her home, assaulting her, and carving an "X" in her neck.

Police immediately arrest him and charge with burglary and assault that could get him life in prison.

His parents go $150,000 in debt trying to hire a lawyer and post his bail.

People are convinced he did it, and he has no alibi to prove otherwise.

His mom finds a selfie-pic he sent her that was dated at the time of the assault.

The pic clears him of all charges, since it placed him away from the crime.

The ex-girlfriend gets off scot-free with no charges for lying while he had his life ruined.

Believe all women, or some ****.

I get the point you're making, but the framing isn't entirely correct. Not surprising since the article is WaPo.

From other reports I read, the picture in question was the accussed and his mom taken at a hotel more than 70 miles from the scene of the crime. So while the picture was helpful to confirm his alibi, it's not like he would have had "no" alibi without the pic. His mom would have testified that they were together. Pulling cell phone location data like would have helped too. All of that is missing from this article.

Second, unless I'm misreading, bail would have likely been 10% of $150k, not the full amount unless his total bail was $1.5M, which isn't likley. $15k isn't chump change, but not $150k.

Again, the whole thing is BS and none of this makes what happened OK, just pointing out the inconsistencies of this story versus other reports I've read.
